my folate serum is 23ng/ml. i take a folate supplement daily 400 mcg. i also eat folate-rich foods daily like cooked spinach, lentil soup, nutritional yeast etc. i read that too much folate can put baby at higher risk of autism. am i taking too much?

: I am presuming that you are pregnant. If so, it is recommended that you consume at least 400mcg/day of folic acid, but in some cases the dose should be higher. Folic acid has many benefits for a developing fetus including reducing risk of neural tube defects. It is a water soluble vitamin so usually high levels are not a significant concern. Please check with your doctor for what is best for you.

what is the half life of a 1000 mcg folate supplement?  in other words, not withstanding existing folate in my body or what i eat, how long for 1000 mcg supplement to be out of my system?  thx?

: The half life is the term used to describe when 1/2 a drug/material is eliminated from the body. For folic acid the half life is sited as 1.5 to 2 hrs. The general rule is it takes 4 half lives to remove a substance from the body. Some separate compartments like the spinal fluid circulation may retain it longer. I would expect it to be gone in less than a day.

i am taking b complex vitamin w/ 200 mcg of folic acid , i would like to also start a multi vitamin which has 400 mcg of folate, together is it safe ?

Yes: Folic acid is a good vitamin and you cannot overdose on it. We recommend 400 to 1000 mcg for all reproductive age women.

any significance to a folate (folic acid) level > 24 ng and vit b12 = 343 pg/ml for someone always tired? (fyi vit d = 38 ng and ferritin = 39 mcg)

No: With all the testing i would ask is the underlying problem anemia? Always helps to know why tests are ordered. As important as the results, or more so.

No.: Methylfolate side effects (only in some people) are:
irritability, insomnia, sore muscles, achy joints, acne, rash, severe anxiety, palpitations, nausea, headaches, migraines. Hair loss is not a side effect of
methylfolate (metafolin).

Nutritional : If you are vegan, then this is to be expected and you should be taking supplements. You may have malabsorption and may need to consult a GI specialist.

No: The normal range is 4-20 depending on the lab. That being said even four is at the low range.  Try to be at least 50% or higher since Folic Acid is helpful for replicating cells, fertility, possible helpful in neuromuscular disease. I recommend at least 800mcg to 1mg daily until you catch up and then taking them about 3-4x/week to maintain your levels.
