Cavities: Fluoride makes the teeth less susceptible to cavities by increasing the strength of the enamel. With good home care, brushing and flossing, and regular check ups at your dentist teeth can remain cavity free for a lifetime. Even with Fluoride poor homecare/high sugar diets equal cavities.

It depends: if the cavity is just beginning then high concentration of sodium fluoride might control the expansion of the cavity
If you have a well established cavity then you need to have your dentist eliminate it and place a filling
If you are prone to decay then you should be using a fluoride rinse and have excellent oral hygiene

Bunk: To treat decay the infected tooth material must be physically removed.  Period.  If the procedure you're inquiring about was effective, Dentists would have adopted it long ago.

Flouride: Fluoride does not prevent cavities... It helps in preventing cavities. Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, eating healthy foods, avoiding sugary drinks and in between meal snacking, as well as visiting your dentist at least twice a year will all help.

Fluoride?: It cannot prevent cavities on its own but can help to strengthen the enamel of your teeth to make them more resistant to cavities.  When in doubt, listen to authorities in the field and not friends, neighbors, and sensational news reports or internet trash. By the way, Fluoride occurs naturally in nature. That's how we originally found out it works!

Toothpastes: The best way to protect teeth from cavities is thorough and proper brushing and flossing, and proper eating habits.
Any toothpaste will clean your teeth. Fluoride is not a substitute for poor and improper oral hygiene and poor diet choices.

can adults use fluoride treatments? i remember getting fluoride treatments when i went to the dentist as a kid, but those have stopped in adulthood. lately i've been having more and more cavities for some reason, and i'm wondering if i could ask my dentis

Fluoride : Fluoride treatment is an excellent recommendation!  
adults with a higher rate of decay or greater potential for decay should receive regular Fluoride treatments.  I offer topical application of Fluoride twice a year or a prescription based Fluoride toothpaste every day.  This treatment has shown to prevent caries.  It also can reverse cavities that haven't penetrated the enamel.  This is real stuff that I have seen work for hundreds of my patients.  It is a great "bang for your buck" too.

Accepted Answer

Mouthwashes: The single best way to prevent cavities is to brush and floss properly and avoid food and liquids that are high in unrefined sugars or sticky carbohydrates. Also consult with your own dentist to see how well you are taking care of your mouth.  Anticavity-fluoride rinses can also help but have a minimal effect when compared to the more important factors I mentioned.

dentists, is natural toothpaste an effective alternative to fluoride based toothpastes? or will natural toothpastes like "jason" be ineffective at fighting off cavities? i use natural because of a canker sore sensitivity to the sls in normal pastes.

ADA Seal: Any toothpaste that carries the ADA seal of acceptance would be considered effective in keeping your teeth healthy. If you have such allergies to ingredients, you can supplement your oral hygiene routine with a fluoride rinse.
