my son is 10wks old, breastfed and has flu/cold, his coughing and has a blocked stuffy nose. i was sick with flu last week. is there anything i can give him at this age and rub vicks/ carvol on his chest?

No meds: Most congestion at this age is from airborne irritants/perfumes/dust/etc. A vigorous washout of the nose with saline drops is very helpful. Please never use Vicks or any other stinky material that aggravates this.I never use it under the age of 2.

Cold-virus: Viral illnesses can sometimes take longer than you would like to recover form totally.  Be patient and slowly increase your diet to tolerable food from previous days.  If you do not get better in a few days still , then see the Dr. for and evaluation.

Not easy: Pnaumonia is usually associated with fever, chills, cough and feeling tired. Some time the difficulty breathing is prominent.

Accepted Answer

Time: There is no real value in any of the "cough or cold" products in kids his age. They give you something to do, but the kid is better served by not facing side effects of the meds. Good nutrition, fluids and rest work wonders.

Not likely: While your symptoms are not likely due to the flu, they could be do to an unrelated vaginal infection.  Other factors to think about, are you on the pill?  Have you had unprotected sex, any GI symptoms.

The : The most common symptoms of flu according to the center for disease control are: 
-fever (usually high) 
-headache 
-nausea, vomiting or diarrhea 
-fatigue 
-sore throat 
-runny nose or congestion 
-cough 
-body aches

unfortunately, it is difficult to diagnose the flu based on symptoms alone since many other illnesses can cause similar symptoms.  Most viral illnesses start to improve after 3-4 days.  If you are not staring to feel better in this time frame, you should give your doctor a call for an appointment.  Good luck!

always get a flu (cough, cold, sore throat, yellow phlegm) within a week after exercise. a 1 hour gym class and i'm sick. how to prevent this pls?

Exercise/infection: There is some evidence that parameters of immune function can be slightly diminished with intense exercise but this is more than balanced by the beneficial effects of exercise. The probability here is that you are being exposed to classmates with infections that are transmitted to you, and not that your immune system is being compromised.

Recurrent infections: Children will experience more colds and infections especially if they attend daycare, exposed to cigarette smoke or were forn very premature.  Chronic or recurrent congestion, cough may indicate allergies and/or asthma.  Less common is an immune system problem predisposing children to recurrent, severe or unusual infections.  An allergist can assist in sorting these out.

: Whether this is "normal" depends on when this started/how long it's been.Respiratory viral infections like the flu/colds/COVID-19 can last for weeks and may progress through various stages/symptoms. Sinus infections and pneumonia could also occur as complications of viral infections.I would recommend seeing your doctor to be examined to make sure you don't have any of these and if so, get treated.

my ear is block since 24h after taken a plane!can i take tylenol for cold,cough,flu since i already taken reactine 24h yesterday at 10 pm or what i do?

Yes, you can: unless contraindicated, also try saline nasal washes and salt water gargles, you most probably have Eustachian tube(s) dysfunction, the tubes connecting the middle ears to the throat,. if no improvement see you doctor, good luck
