is a crown lengthening something i have to have done? after having most of my tooth ground down for the the permanent crown after my temporary crown was removed, i was told that i will need a crown lengthening in order for the permanent crown to fit prope

The : The dentist restoring that tooth has to be able to fit that crown on solid tooth structure. The edge of the new crown has to be in harmony with your bone and gum tissue. If the dentist tries to make the edge of the crown too far below the gum surface to grab onto the tooth, he/she will be invading a very sensitive space.

Violating this space can cause many, many problems for you, including pain, bleeding, swelling, inflammation, food trapping, and bone loss. If your tooth is as broken down as you say, then the tooth lengthening is probably necessary. Insurance doesn't alway cover every part of your treatment, and patients need to understand that that is not the dentist's fault... Its how the policies are written.

The alternative is to extract the tooth and place an implant, but that would be far more expensive than the treatment you have described.

should a tooth bridge fit against the gum?

Accepted Answer

Almost always yes: The only time the replaced missing tooth does not touch the gums is either following an extraction if the dentist did not wait long enough for the gums to heal and shrink or in the use of a sanitary teeth  that are attached to the support teeth but the underside sits well off the gums to prevent bacteria and food from accumulating and it makes it much easier to clean.

what causes a tooth to hurt when biting down on hard/crunchy food with a new crown thats adjusted to fit my bite? the tooth had a root canal 4 years ago and was recently shaved down for a new crown (the old crown broke). it had an apicoectomy in feb?

: Great Questions! Teeth hurt on biting when there is infection around the root or at the apex, or if the tooth is fractured or if the "bite" is high. Root canal treated teeth quite often fracture with time because the blood supply keeping the nerve healthy and the tooth supple and elastic are no longer there.  Go back to your dentist immediately.

if i need to get a root canal on my upper central incisor, will this effect the fit of my night guard? does it alter the shape/size of tooth?

Accepted Answer

Root canal Therapy: The treatment will not alter the shape or size of the tooth. However, if this tooth requires a crown following the root canal therapy, your night guard may need to be adjusted and refitted to the new crown. Discuss with your treating dentist.

i have had a bad tooth nerve pain for 1 month. food gets stuck in gums daily. my dentist couldn't fit me in for an appointment. my molar now fell out and the pain has gone. what do i do now?

Find a new dentist: Ur pain is gone because the  crown part of the tooth broke and tooth was infected and partially dead. The roots are still in the bone and eventhoughnit does not hurt is still infected and you don't want infected part in your jaw bone. Might need to get it extracted. Find a new dentist who can fit you in soon.

which are the best denture types to fit where a couple of missing upper molars are now removed under a bridge due to tooth infection,chrome cobalt or semi flexible?and also best for quality comfort and durability? and is there other newer types?

Accepted Answer

: A chromium cobalt frame will provide rigidity and if properly designed will not cause aberrant forces of your abutment teeth. A flexite denture distorts when you bite and the forces on your remaining teeth are unpredictable, often causing premature loss of those teeth. If your budget allows, consider root replacements (implants) to restore your mouth to proper form and function.

Question 7

i grind my teeth at night and have done so for many years. i use a custom fit night mouth guard to help protect my teeth. all of a sudden i'll wake up with severe tooth pain. is this infection or is this my teeth shifting. no redness of gums?

: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. It would be prudent to see a dentist. Wish you good health!

what are your thoughts? could wearing a retainer that doesn't quite fit my teeth move them to the wrong shape?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Wearing an ill-fitting retainer can allow the teeth to shift back or may push them out of position. This may cause you arch to be misshaped, the opposing  teeth to move and throw your bite off. Go back to your orthodontist or dentist for an evaluation.  They may be able to adjust the retainer to fit properly or take an impression for new appliance.

hello docs, i need braces but i don't know if my teeth fit the criteria?

Easy to find out: Call an orthodontic specialist for an initial examination (free or low cost) for an evaluation of your malocclusion and the options email able to you.  With that information you can make an informed decision.

i  have a clear night retainer which fits but not entirely. my teeth have moved slightly on the top. can it fit properly if i wear it for a while?

Accepted Answer

Probably no: Retainers are designed to be worn consistently to prevent shifting of teeth.   They often need to be worn daily to keep your teeth in their ideal position.   If you forget & wear it a couple of days later & it still goes to place, but is tight, then your teeth can reposition within the retainer.  But, if some teeth currently do not fit, then your retainer usually will not help.  See your dentist.
