good afternoon doctors. my urologist wants me to do a fleet enema before a prostate biopsy. i live alone and am worried that i may not do the enema correctly. is there an oral medication i can take similar to a fleet enema like i did for colonoscopy?

: Not really. A fleets is designed to empty the last segment of your large bowel so the debris in not in the way of your procedure. Oral medications are not dependable for this. They are slow to work and incomplete when/if they do. I would look for a demonstration video online if you need to get some pointers on doing it. The fleets kit has written instructions.

i just started accutane. i have really bad constipation i think its unrelated to accutane. is it okay to use a laxative or fleet enema (sodium bisphosphate) with this drug?

Yes: You can use a laxative once in a while but concentrate on eating healthy with enough fiber and more fruits and vegetables to avoid medications. If chronically constipated you may need doctors advice of how to tackle it with a stool softener which would be safer.

Buffered phosphate: Fleets contains a buffered phosphate solution. This causes a mild stimulation of the rectal reflex. The response is also to to stimulating the stretch fibers in the rectal which causes a relex contraction of the muscular wall.

No: Enemas should not be painful. It is possible it was inserted in such a way that it caused a mucosal tear or fissure. Do not try using another enema until you have been evaluated by your doctor.

Accepted Answer

No: Usually the small volume of a fleet's enema is not a problem. If this is a persistent need to use the enema for a bowel movement, then something other than simple constipation may be a problem and should be evaluated.

Accepted Answer

Yes: It really depends why you are doing an enema.  If you have been advised to do a fleets enema in preparation for a procedure, it would be best to follow that recommendation. If you are taking a daily or periodic enema to aid bowel function, then tap water may be adequate.  In theory, warm water relaxes the bowel, so a warm water enema may be less effective than a room or tap temperature enema.

Yes: Colace (docusate sodium) is a softener and usually does not stimulate the GI tract. Enemas work by causing rectal distension which causes the rectum to evacuate the local contents. However, prolonged and frequent use of enemas can be irritating to the lining of the rectum.

Not first choice: Preferable to use other methods first. An ultrasound can determine your gestational age

Holding in a large: Bollus of fluid in the rectum can be uncomfortable. However, if you have been consitpated then getting rid of excess stool will likely be a big relief.
