Eye doctor to check: Seeing flashes of light in one eye, when there is no reason to see flashes of light, may be a symptom of retinal detachment (which means the inner lining of the eyeball is coming loose). That means one should see an ophthalmologist now (retinal detachment is a medical emergency). One can go to the Emergency Room if she has no eye doctor, and the E.R. can call the ophthalmologist on-call if needed.

: There are several possible causes of these symptoms and all require an urgent visit with your doctor or ER.  Beginning of a detached retina, stroke, and panic attack are the first three that come to mind immediately. Call your doctor and if you cannot be seen right away, go to your nearest ER for evaluation.

When rt eye closed?: How do you know it's in your right EYE (as opposed to right FIELD of VISION)? Do the flashes of light (fol) go away when you close the right eye? Do the fol only appear on the right side of your body? Both eyes contribute to the sense of vision on the right side. Either retina could've detached, or you could've some other problem. 1st step: See an ophthalmologist for a complete eye exam. Good luck

Context: The clear gel that fills eyeball is normally attached to all parts of the inside of the eye.  As we get older it can become more liquid (watery) and detaches from the back of the retina causing flashes as it pulls on the retina ; floaters.  This is made worse when reading, looking side to side, basically with eye movement.  Scintillations occur with atypical migraine- with or without headache.

?retinal tear: The most common cause of "eye flashes" occurs when the gel in your eye separates (posterior vitreous detachment). In some circumstances separation of the gel can pull on the retina and cause a tear of the retina which can lead to retinal detachment and the need for emergency surgery. Floaters or black spots usually accompanies this. Other causes include migraine and inflammation of the eye.
