No: Although we are always working to improve care, we have not developed a way to repair or fix all meniscal tears.  The meniscus itself is part of the problem as its healing potential is low.  We just don't have great ways of manipulating biology yet.  Luckily, we can treat the pain and symptoms that they cause in the mean time.

Meniscus tears: If the tear causes mechanical symptoms such as pinching and catching or locking, and you have failed conservative care, then yes.  Typically you would try physiotherapy, anti inflammatory medication, activity modification and injections prior to surgery.

Torn cartilage: The meniscus is a cartilage which lives between the bone of your thigh and shin.  It acts as a shock absorber and can tear.  Very small tears may heal, others may require surgery to repair or remove the tear.

Not much: While a meniscus that is torn can sometimes tear a little further, the tears can also stabilize and settle into a position that no longer causes pain or problems. A meniscus tear that doesn't cause pain is one that should be left alone. A meniscus tear itself does not cause arthritis or any other problems. Let pain be your indicator and guide.

Heal a meniscal tear: Depending on the type of meniscal tear you have, healing naturally varies. If it is a recent injury, recommend RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation). You can also use an over the counter anti-inflammatory (Motrin or Aleve). Recommend evaluation by an orthopedic surgeon. If it the injury is older  (&gt;4 weeks), it will likely not heal on it's  own. Either way, recommend evaluation by a surgeon.

Arthritis: Lateral meniscal tears are always a concern, but even more worrisome when arthritis is present. The tear could be incidental. Assess the joint space with standing straight, flexed views and assess alignment. Be very cautious when discussing the source of your pain and optimal treatment.

No: I tear needs arthroscopic repair. A cortisone shot will not help.

Surgery: While a physician may have a high certainty that the meniscus is torn through physical exam, the only 2 methods to diagnose a meniscus tear are with an MRI or surgery.  Keep in mind, some meniscus tears may also be missed on an mri.

$2500-$7000: The total cost is somewhere between $2500 and $5000. That would include the 1) surgeon consultation, surgical fee, and followup visit, 2) surgery center or hospital fee, 3) anesthesiologist fee. There are sometimes cash rates available for the whole thing for about $2500 as well. These days, there is sometimes room for negotiation at certain centers where we could quote a bundled cash rate.
