Hand numb/neck pain : The nerves that control the muscles and carry sensation of the hand and arm pass through the neck and arms. When you sleep you can apply pressure on the neck and arm nerve which can cause the hands and fingers to get numb. A good physical examination can help figure this out. See your doctor.

i have a stiff neck all the time, my thumb and next two fingers go numb at night when i sleep occasionally?

Nerve pinch: A stiff neck could be muscular or you might have some arthritis.  Numbness of thumb and next fingers could be from a pinch nerve in your neck or carpal tunnel syndome (nerve pinch of the nerve at the wrist). There are other things but these two are common. Start with simple stretches to your neck and upper back, a beginner yoga class might help. See your doctor if no resolution, physical therapy.

VASCULAR VRS NERVE: Could wonder about carpal tunnel syndrome, but maybe a cold reaction secondary to raynaud's phenomenon.  Have your primary doctor check it out, as this may be quite benign and easily handled.

Joint stiffness: If your joints are stiff in the morning and they get better as the day goes by, you may be suffering from arthritis. You need to be evaluated by a physician for this and the other issue

Could be: Related to some form of nerve compression, like carpal tunnel.   Have your family doctor evaluate you, and decide if you need a referral to a hand surgeon.

Numbness: It is possible. If you are sleeping in positions that rest heavy pressure on blood vessels or even kink them off, this would cause a lack of blood flow to the nerves thereby causing the areas downstream to become numb.

hello. my dad says that his left pinky finger is numb.he's 57, and has no communicable illnesses. what would cause one's finger to go to sleep?

Ulnar nerve: Pressure on the ulnar nerve could be the source of the numbness, often at the level of the elbow, but could be anywhere from the spine to the hand on the same side as the numbness.  The pressure could be the result of something as common as resting ones arm against the car door while driving.  Ones doctor can help assess the problem.

Carpal tunnel: Suspect carpal tunnel or interruption of circulation. Will require physician evaluation.

Numbness : Numbness to the driver's finger is a serious problem, lol. On a more serious note this could be an early sign of carpal tunnel syndrome or some other neurological problem. Try sleeping with a wrist split and see if the problem improves or goes away.

Muscular, carpal tun: This may be a significant muscular problem related to your neck position during sleep.  Experiment with pillow. Could also be a bit of irritation of nerves in the neck without true hnp.  Also, carpal tunnel synd often causes upper extremity pain and tingling/numbness at night. Try a Velcro wrist brace when you sleep
