No: Fine needle aspiration (fna) biopsies can be performed on either solid or cystic masses.  An fna yields cells/cellular clusters, while a tissue core provides a glimpse of how the cells interact with surrounding tissue.  In certain situations, observation of that interaction provides the pathologist with enough information to specifically diagnose a tumor versus a more general diagnosis (with fna).

If the aspiration was from a cyst and the fluid appeared benign to the provider it may be discarded.

FNA complications: FNA (Fine Needle Aspiration) can be complicated locally by external or internal bleeding (hematoma) and depending on the location of the aspirated lesion one might develop air in the chest cavity(pneumothorax), perforating of the bowel(peritonitis), blood in the urine or stool, infected biopsy site with spread to the blood, and pain. Most FNA's have minimal complications other than minor pain.

Depends: Depends on the physician doing the biopsy.  It's a simple procedure.  Some physicians use local anesthetic, some use Ethyl Chloride (cold spray), some use nothing at all.  Call the physician's office to find out ahead of time how he/she does it so you can anticipate.  Good luck.
