Not yet...: Advances in medicine are constantly occurring; so someday there will be.  Best advise is to manage the discomfort appropriately; and see your ob/gyn or primary care physician if it becomes unmanageable to make sure there is nothing else going on.

Not sure: Fibrocystic usually refers to a breast syndrome that is normal in up to 50% of women. Polycystic ovary is a syndrome that affects approximately 15% of women and involves hormone changes, menstrual irregularities, increased risk of infertility and insulin resistance.

Common problem: Fibrocystic disease/changes is very common in women.  This is most often seen during the menstrual cycle.  Breast feel lumpy and painful which is caused by cyst formation (fluid filled areas) due to hormonal changes.  Some women may have these changes without being on their menstrual cycle.  Caffeine may cuase the cysts to be overactive resulting in pain. This is not related to cancer.

Sweat Chloride: If you are referring to cystic fibrosis, the standard diagnostic test is to conduct 2 back-to-back sweat chloride tests.  These tests measure the amount of sodium and chloride in the sweat content; levels of 60 milliequivalents per liter or above are considered diagnostic.  The disease can also be diagnosed by running a genetic test, but this is more expensive.

Yes: There are different patterns of abnormality on a mammogram--some of which are worrisome, some are not.  Some abnormalities can show up on an ultrasound, some can't.  An ultrasound is best used to further evaluate specific abnormalities to help ascertain whether a biopsy is needed, but it is not a good screening tool.

Lumpy-Bumpy Breasts: Fibrocystic changes are a spectrum of pathologic findings seen on biopsy.  This has morphed into a clinical term for "lumpy-bumpy" breast tissue and/or dense tissue seen on mammography.  This is not a disease, just a variant of normal.  This requires no treatment, just reassurance.

Not usually: Fibrocystic breast disease is a disorder aggravated by coffee and smoking. However it is not a precursor to malignancy. Fibrocystic breast disease makes mammogram interpretation more problematic.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Firm massaging can help with breast pain... Don't do it so hard as to cause bruising. Also might want to look into evening primrose oil  (available at most vitamin stores).

Physiologic changes: Usual physiologic changes that include hormonal fluctuations, increase or decrease of different components of breast (pregnancy, lactation, aging), or thick secretions can all cause fibrocystic changes. These are not associated with increase risk of cancer. Regular breast exams and mammograms are still recommended.

Many characteristics: Fibrocystic breast can have different characteristics- you can feel something that feels like a small "bb", a rock, a pea or just an area of irregular thickness and tenderness.  However any new breast finding or change in breast warrants eval by your doctor and possibly mammogram and/or ultrasound. It is important to be assessed- so make an appointment.
