Chronic constipation: For how long?  opioids / anticholinergics? Drink  2.5 -3 liters /day, combo of water /gatorade. juice? also 1-2 glassesf prune  juice /day  Consider Sitz study where they have you swallow markers and over 5 days see how many you release  in stool, if few are released it means the bowel is moving too slow. or may have congential absence of muscularis  in some colon section.  f/u w/ gastroenterology

how do you slowly increase fiber intake? last time i took a cup of psyillum powder daily, it didn't seem to make me go to the bathroom, it took laxatives to make me go, was i taking too much? it softened it, but didn't make me go more than usual?

Overdose?: With most or all psyllium products (e.g. Metamucil), that's a huge overdose. Usually 1-2 teaspoons 1-3 times daily. See a doctor for in-person evaluation and advice.

Fiber: Laxative r a stimulant & u will b come dependent on them where as fiber is a natural way 2 ur colon 2 absorb more h2o & that softens ur stool. Also remain well hydrated. Urinating seldom during the day & dark urine means u need more h2o. More often & almost clear color means good hydration. Stay away from stimulants.

Flax is good: Any plant contains fiber which can help with digestive processes and bowel movements. Pysllium, a plant fiber, is the most often used and is available in many over the counter preparations. Flax seed also contains beneficial plant oils which are good for cholesterol.

Most likely: If you over use laxatives, the colon can become dependent and require laxatives for a BM to occur. Metamucil and fiber will help, but you may need a daily or twice daily stool softener to help while your bowel habits return to normal. Try over the counter colace or miralax with metamucil each day. If not working, you may need to try something else.
