Accepted Answer

Should be OK: May have eaten something which disagreed with them.  If they are now ok, watch closely.  If they develop any other symptoms, particularly changes in responsiveness, feeding, irritability, fever or anything unusual, see your doctor.  If remains normal, relax.

my 4 year old and i have both had a fever this week. i have an almost 3 month old baby should i take her to emergency if she gets a fever?

Accepted Answer

Depends: She doesn't need to be seen if she just has fever, especially if this is just a virus and you and the 4yo are not that sick with it. If the 3mo is unable to keep up with her fluid needs or otherwise bothers your "mommy" sense, have her seen.

can teething cause coughing in a 3 month old baby? when must you take the baby in to get checked? he has no fever?

Accepted Answer

No : I don't expect teething to cause much of any symptoms beyond more mouthing of fingers/chewing. Cough at that age is generally a reaction to irritants they breathe from their environment. Dust/fragrance/fumes/smells/etc. A  nasal cleanout with saline nose drops helps most. If feeding falls off &amp; normal activity diminish it mayy be worthwhile to have the kid seen.

i think my 3 month old baby has a cold. she has a runny nose and a wet cough. there are no signs of a fever. should i be giving her medication?

Accepted Answer

No: The first months are troubled by narrow nasal passages &amp; exposure to dust, fragrances, smoke &amp; other irritants.Baby tries to flush these out of the nose  with mucous but this often ends as congestion &amp; produces rattling &amp; cough. The best rx is washing out the nose with saline &amp; suctioning the remainder. There are no meds that help at that  age.

i kissed someone else 3 month old baby and later that day i got a fever blister on my lip.( it was just a bump with no fluid) could the baby catch it?

Accepted Answer

Possibly: This sounds like herpes simplex or a cold sore. The virus is contagious. Let the Mom know so she can watch for symptoms. A first time herpes infection may cause blisters around the month and in the mouth as well as swelling of the gingiva. It can be treated if it is diagnosed within the 1st 48 hours.

i have bodyaches, weak, no fever or cough & i feel very cold. could this be the flu? i'm a breastfeeding mother to a 3 month old baby.

It is possible: That you may be coming down with the flu especially if you are not getting enough sleep. You will be more prone to catching a cold or any virus. Get plenty of sleep, eat properly and take something to help you feel better. Otherwise you will have to see your pcp. Get the flu shot if you have not had yours yet.

Where: Where was it measured and why were you measuring it. Regardless of the temperature, if your baby seems sick have him/her seen. To get an accurate temperature at this age, a rectal temperature is best.

is this normal?

Accepted Answer

Slightly elevated: This may be a sign of infection. Continue to monitor the temperature and if it is 38.5 or higher, baby Tylenol may be given. Continue to feed as usual, and watch for signs of a respiratory infection. Other causes include an ear infection. If there is an elevation in temperature for more than one day, signs of poor feeding or lethargy/irritability, please see your pediatrician on the same day.

what is the easiest and safest way to break a fever on a 17 month old infant?

Shower: Giving a bath in tepid water (not cold) is the answer. You can give tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin as well if i want to "keep" fever down. Remember fever is the way to defend oneself from infection. It is not bad in itself. But if persistent or associated with pain, vomiting, difficulty breathing or overall "sick appearance" when a febrile, then you should get it checked by your doctor.

See below: Before seeking medical care you may try a period of resting the stomach without feeding for a 1-2 hrs and reintroducing a smaller amount and allowing your infant to digest things more efficiently by keeping him/her upright and allowing the stomach to empty. Reflux can be common. Loose stools is an infant norm-never formed or hard. If fussy and not consolable see your doctor or go to the er.
