Complex question: If the cause is poor venous circulation- elevation of legs frequently, compression hose, salt restriction and and leg toning exercise are all easy to do.

No: you have venous stasis.  Any other swelling can be like abscess formation, muscle herniation.  Fracture, and if you have the above trust me you will know it right away.   My advice if you have good arterial flow get 30-40mmHg compression sock and use them. Cut salt from diet and elevate feet when at rest

Also, symptoms and other local signs are also important. In the case of venous insufficiency compression stockings are a first line treatment. Conditions such as lymphedema require other approaches. See your physician for evaluation and appropriate referral.

Uncertain: This is something you should take your physician. The swelling in one leg or an ankle may be related to the venous return from the lower extremity. The pain and numbness in one arm and leg could suggest a neurologic system. This is why you should take this to your physician.

First : First of all, you need to be sure there is no blood clot in your leg if you are having pain and swelling.  A blood clot is a medical emergency and can only be determined by a vascular study (ultrasound).

To help swelling, you are right to elevate the leg.  If the accident happened within 72 hours use cold, if greater than that warm packs are fine.  Compression hose may help discomfort from swelling.

If there is significant swelling from an injury, fluid has been forced into the tissues in places where it usually isn't, and this can take weeks to subside and there is not a great deal you can do besides elevation and compression stockings to help the appearance and symptoms.

If you have redness, increased swelling, red streaks, or fever, you need to have an immediate medical evaluation.

If unilateral - DVT?: While it is common to have swollen lower extremities postpartum as fluid shifts occur after delivery, this is usually bilateral.  If the swelling is unilateral and/or accompanied by pain, would recommend seeking evaluation to confirm not a deep vein thrombosis of the lower extremity, which has potential serious medical complications (e.g. Pulmonary embolus).

Leg swelling : Large fibroids can restrict the flow of lymph from the legs and cause swelling. There are many other commons reasons for leg swelling which are connected to fibroids;such as a large lymph nodes, heart, liver, kidney issues, leg clot, protein malnutrition, lymphedema
