The : The lens in the eye is made mostly of water and protein. The protein molecule is arranged such that it is crystal clear thereby allowing light passing thorough to the retina analogous to a film in a camera.

With age, the protein in the lens changes (becomes "denatured") and it becomes physically cloudy. This creates visual symptoms.

Some studies suggest that ultraviolet light is also associated with cataract formation. Medical problems such as diabetes increase the rate of progression of cataracts. Many medications such as steroids, etc do also contribute to an increased rate of cataract formation. Risk factors include genetics, smoking, poor diet, and heavy alcohol consumption, and many others.

Initially when symptoms of cataract (such as blurred vision, glare, difficulty with driving at night, etc) appear, one may able to improve vision with glasses, improved lighting, and other visual aids. An attempt to reduce the risk factors, some mentioned above is important.

If cataracts interfere with active daily living activities, and the quality of vision with correction is not satisfactory, after consultation with an ophthalmologist, one may consider cataract surgery.

Except in certain situations, cataract surgery is elective, meaning that it is ultimately a decision made by the patient after considering pros/cons of cataract surgery.

im a 52-year-old male. i have cataracts in my left eye. extremely blurry vision in this eye now. i had retina detachment surgery in the same eye 2-years ago. how long does cataract surgery take approximately?

Cataract surgery: once all the preparations are completed and the ophthalmologist is ready to operate, an uncomplicated procedure takes only20 minutes or so.

Maybe: A droopy eyelid, or ptosis, after cataract surgery is a risk of the procedure. It usually resolves on its own. However, if it doesn't, it can be corrected with another surgery.

Jetrea: As long as your retinal status is stable, there should be no reason to postpone your cataract surgery.

Yes: Surgery can repair the droopy eyelid as well as the torn retina. It depends on what is causing the droopy eyelid to determine what treatment works the best. Also, depends on how much of the retina is detached to determine what treatment works the best and what the vision prognosis is.  Your ophthalmologist will be able to help you.  Good luck!

2nd eye cataract: After presumably successful cataract surgery on a patient's first eye, he will be given the option of whether he wants the other eye operated on.  Most patients will eventually decide to do this, but it's not mandatory.  It mainly depends on the severity of the other cataract and if the patient is having persistent visual symptoms from it.

Depends: The treating ophthalmologist will discuss with you the means for dealing with a surgery which had complications.  This may involve extra use of medication, further surgery and sometimes referral to a specialist like a retinal surgeon.  In some cases time is the only thing needed as all eyes do   not heal at the same rate.

can cataract surgery be redone on the same eye?

Accepted Answer

Not needed: A cataract is an opacity of the substance of the natural lens.  Surgical correction is done by removal of this material.  A cataract of this sort cannot recur although the supporting back membrane holding the artificial lens can lose transparency requiring a quick laser procedure to open it up and restore vision.  Rarely a lens may need changing or stabilizing but this is corrective and not a redo.

Probably OK but ask!: This is a standard procedure, quite simple for almost any ophthalmologist; probably no worries. (Asking if an ophthalmologist is experienced in cataract surgery is almost like asking if a carpenter is good at hammering nails into wood!) But if in doubt, just ask how many procedures s/he has done and how things turned out. Most surgeons are happy to share such data with their patients.
