This sounds like a neurological neuropathy. Usually one sided could be from trigeminal neuralgia, or TMJ from grinding your molars at night, poor jaw alignment. Another cause is low calcium levels. Tapping the trigeminal nerve can illicit twitching which can be a supporting clue of low calcium levels.

Irritability of superficial nerves of skin and scalp is the cause of these sensations. If frequent, then deficiencies of calcium, magnesium can be the cause. Caffeine may also make superficial nerves irritable. If widespread or frequent symptoms occur, consult a neurologist for evaluation and advice.
