Everyone is: different but setting target date to stop and then stopping completely on that day can be effective.  Learning some self-hypnosis can support this plan of action.  Chewing gum or eating mints is useful, especially at high risk times like coffee breaks. Peace and good health.  Depression doesn't help but constructive use of anger can, e.g.,telling yourself that you are not letting smoke have power.

Possibly: Nicotine is a stimulant drug that speeds up the nervous system. It is considered a behavioral stimulant and is highly addictive (as you are well aware). In addition, smokers often stop taking their frequent relaxing breaks when they quit smoking. Both the withdrawal from the stimulant and the cessation of the frequent enjoyable relaxation can lead to a downward emotional spiral for some.

i am taking wellbutrin (bupropion) for depression and to help me with quitting smoking. how long does it usually take to be able to tell if its helping you?

3 - 4 weeks : It can take up to 3 - 4 weeks to have a sense of whether wellbutrin (bupropion) is helping you. If you have a partial benefit at that point there may be some further benefit over the next few weeks. If you have absolutely no benefit at that point it probably won't work for you.

Yes: Wellbutrin (bupropion) and Chantix may be used together to reduce tobacco (and other) cravings. Reduce but not eliminate!

Get help: Lots of medicines and smoking cessation aids out there. Talk to you doctor and ask them for help. Ask your friends, family, co-workers and everyone in your life to help you quit and "stay quit".

If you : are very sensitive to the hormones in the ring, yes this could be a cause,  medication to help depression may help until you adjust to the hormones. Other forms of hormonal birth control my cause the same or worse symptoms in some cases. Let your doctor know.

Have to be careful: Chantix is effective, but I do see that you have depression, and Chantix can definitely make this worse. It has also been associated with suicide attempts. So, I would be very careful with Chantix in your case. Better to talk about this in detail with your doctor.

why can't i get wellbutrin (bupropion) in the uk for depression? is it that dangerous? my gp will only prescribe zyban for quiting smoking and only for 9 weeks!

Not dangerous: I do not know why bupropion is not approved in the uk, except zyban for smoking cessation. It is no more dangerous (and many would say far less) than the ssri and snri drugs (effexor, prozac, paxil, (paroxetine) zoloft etc etc). It is one of the few antidepressants not associated with weight gain or sexual dysfunction, and the rate of seizures, of concern, is really low. See if doc will order from us/canada...

i smoked cigarettes for 20 years quit smoking cold turkey. been three months and relapsed last week for two days due to low moods and anxiety. i don't have history of depression. now even more anxious and sleep disturbance. will this end ?

: It's often difficult to determine whether symptoms are caused by withdrawal or by underlying depression and/or chronic anxiety. I recommend consulting a mental health professional to help you sort this out and treat you if indicated after the assessment.
