my  48 yr old best friend has recently lost her long term memory of the last 35 years. what could be the cause? doctors told her to see a psycologist.

Needs an Internist: Did she get evaluated with clinical exam by internist/neurologist , including imaging of the brain with ct scan/ MRI brain etc. Was a stroke ruled out. Memory is a higher function of brain.If already she saw her pcp, then she needs to see a neurologist before she goes to phycologist as their help may be  lesser than a psychiatrist if she has pseudodementia from severe depression.More history  neede.

Not illegal: Your doctor may be concerned about the "complex back pain" you have listed as a clinical finding,  and is trying to understand all possible information about this.  S/he may wonder about you being on medicare at a young age (if you are).  S/he may refer to to a psychologist to help any stress/emotional issues which can contribute to pain, and may decide not to see you if you won't work on this.

No basic test: The DX of adhd relies on evaluation and observational, objective data, for example, from teachers, parents, others.  Some insurance plans pay for the psychological testing that might be needed, but, again, observations and records from childhood are often helpful in determining the proper diagnosis. Save money by finding a doctor who works with your insurance, & gathering school records yourself.

Openly and honestly: Simply ask.  The physician is there to serve your best interest.  If you feel that counseling with a psychologist would benefit you, simply express that to your physician in confidence.  You may feel uncomfortable bringing it up, but remember that we deal with these topics daily and nothing ask is going to surprise us.

MD vs PhD: A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who completed 4 years of medical school as well as 4 year psychiatry residency. They can precribe medication and do psychotherapy in every state.  Psychologists have advanced degrees either masters or doctorate and are trained in psychotherapy primarily as well as research.  Most phobias don't need meds so both can help. I prefer 2 disciplines to collaborate.

Depends: They both could be doctors. Psychologists can be phd's, while the other might be a do or md. Do's & md's can write prescriptions but psychologists cannot. Even though I am a physician, i try to find the gal cause of the adhd symptoms and treat those rather than covering adhd symptoms with drugs.
