Symptoms include: Rash, conjunctivitis, fever/chills and arthralgias. You would certainly be suspicious since it is an autosomal dominant genetic condition. One parent would be affected and sometimes, several siblings.

Yes: It is a genetic disease inherited in an autosomal dominate pattern.  So if you inherit the gene from a parent who has it, you will also have the same problems with hives, fever, and joint pain on cold exposure.

Treat as needed: Familial cold urticaria cannot be cured but it can be treated with allergy meds and minimizing environmental conditions that trigger it like cold etc.

No: They are caused by totally different mechanisms as far as we can understand since the exact mechanism for either condition is not entirely clear even though we have a lot of information on them.

Good question: No one knows why but it is suspected to be an autoimmune problem. The good news is that it may subside in a few years. Be sure you don't jump into cold water until the problem can be evaluated by an allergist.

Cholinergic Hives: Individuals may experience a cholinergic urticaria reaction in response to any activity that increases overall body temperature (or causes a sweat release).  Some examples include:
taking a hot shower or bath
eating spicy foods
exercising or doing physical activities that increase body temperature.

Hives with cold skin: People who have cold induced urticaria release histamine in their skin when it cools. People react at different temperatures. If you place an ice cube on your skin you will develop a hive at the site (see photo). Keep warm, cover skin in cold air, take antihistamines. Swimming in cold water and cold drinks can be fatal. See an allergist for proper diagnosis and treatment.

With exposure: You can only tell when cold exposure no longer triggers the urticaria. Depending on the cause, it may go away after a few years or not at all.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Raynaud's phenomenon is a vasospastic response of small blood vessels in the digits to external cold. It is a risk factor for stroke. You probably can't eliminate your cause of raynaud's as its ultimately genetic in origin. You can control other risk factors for stroke like cigarette smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
