Find the cause: The first step should be to find the cause - it's possible that too much soap and cleaning can lead to rough skin, or sometimes too much moisture (for example, from repeated licking  of the upper lip) can be the cause. Other skin problems may also be underlying causes. If this persists, a dermatologist may be able to help.

Some thoughts...: Persistent chapped lips may be lip eczema, which can be treated like skin eczema, using hydrocortisone cream, plus Vaseline or Aquaphor to moisturize. Sometimes, lipsticks or lip sunscreen chemicals are causing an allergic reaction on the lips. Other times, a person is a primary lip-licker (it&#x27;s his habit). Once cracked, lips get irritated by routine foods and juices. A doctor can sort things out.

Patch Protection: Lesions about the mouth are often due to chapping, chaffing or fissures (cracks).  Viral infections like cold sores (herpes labialis) can leave a residual dry patch during the resolution phase.  In many cases using a barrier medication works as it seals the overlying skin to prevent further moisture loss and softens the tissue so it doesn't pull or tear with stretching.  Most plain lip balms work.

Skin check by MD: Crusted, flakely spots on the skin can be caused by many factors, the most common of which is a form of sundamage known as Actinic Keratosis.  This is a precancerous spot that if left untreated may progress to a true skin cancer.  Early detection and early treatment is how skin cancers are avoided/cured.  Seek advice from a Plastic Surgeon or dermatologist.
