Why do you have : Compression fractures at 31 unless from trauma and then they will heal within 12 weeks.  Is there an underlying metabolic issue in terms of bone density that may have to be investigated otherwise if not due to trauma.  You may then need to see an endocrinologist for further workup if that is the case.

Chronic back pain: I am sorry you are going through this, chronic back pain is very difficult to treat. Your spine doc is correct. Other options to try, physical therapy, vitamin d3 level and replacement, ask for referral to back pain specialist. You might benefit from injection. Good luck.

had kyphoplasty about 10 years ago for fracture of t7. could this break down and cause chronic chest and abdomen pain from pinched nerves in my back? have had full workup of chest and abdomen and all tests are normal?

Chest and abdominal : Can a T7 problem cause chest pain and abdominal pain yes. The T7 sclerotome refers pain to the upper abdominal region and the T7 nerve can cause pain in the chest. The question are your problems related to T7. I can't be sure without examining you. If it possible that your chest and abdominal pain are not related to T7, yes.

when does someone need a vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty?

Controversial: These procedures can improve the pain on osteoporosis related compression fractures in the elderly.  Unfortunately, they can also increase the risk of adjacent level fractures in these patients.  hence, I suggest patients try bracing before these procedures.  If the bracing is not effective for pain control, then these procedures can certainly help with pain control

are there any risks i should be aware of before my vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty? my vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are scheduled for two weeks from now.  are there risks that i should prepare for?

Vertebroplasty : Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are usually safe and helpful procedures but there are many risks related to the procedure, anesthesia and your general health.  The risks include death, stroke, heart attack, pneumonia, blood clots in lungs and legs, fat embolus, plastic spreading to the lungs, lung collapse, spinal cord or nerve injury causing pain, numbness, weakness, bowel and bladder incontinence or paralysis, infection, bleeding, but not limited to these complications. Several: Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are not risk-free. Short-term complications occur mainly due to extravasation of the cement and can include increased pain and damage from heat or pressure to the spinal cord or nerve roots as well as cement embolization. Long-term problems include local acceleration of bone resorption caused by the treatment itself and new vertebral fractures.

Compression Fracture: Vertebroplasty is a procedure designed for the treatment of osteoporotic compression fractures.  A needle is inserted through the back into the vertebral body with a painful compression fracture.  A bone cement is injected into the bone with fluoroscopic guidance.  The cement will harden in 5-10 minutes.  It can result in immediate relief of pain due to the compression fracture.

what are the realistic results i should expect from a vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty? what should my realistic expectations be about my vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty?  what are the limitations of these procedures?

The : The results from clinical studies have been controversial.  I have found very good results with vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty if you have recent fracture, back tenderness and acute to subacute (recent) swelling of your fracture on MRI and do not have back nerve or spinal cord compression or instability in the spine.  Most people pain improve between 50 to 100%.  Even though uncommon these procedures may have significant risks.  I would discuss the risks and the benefits of those procedures with your spine surgeon.  Good luck!
