Gastric rest: Try not to eat too much spicy foods or milk products.  This usually will resolve in less than 1 week.

Simple: If not exacerbated by alcohol intake or irritating meds, usually Pepcid (famotidine) (10 or 20mg, available over the counter) twice a day until it settles, then once daily for one to a few weeks. If it comes back or breaks through, you should have your Dr be sure you don't need a more advanced medicine or Gastroententerology consult.

Yes: If it is secondary to your h. Pylori an antibiotic combination and a proton pump inhibitor should resolve the problem.

Accepted Answer

Depends on cause: Can be due to long term infection with bacteria, h. Pylori which can cause ulcers, and cancer of stomach. Can be autoiimmune, also can increase risk for stomach cancer. Decreases acid prod. Either can cause vitamin B12 deficiency (can affect blood count and neurological function), iron def, risk of gut infection. If h pylori-rx with meds for about 2 wks. Both need B12 replacement lifelong.

Diet and Medication: The typical treatment is a Reflux diet, which consists of low acid foods, avoiding all citrus, caffeinated foods, fried foods, carbonated drinks, etc.  Also eating smaller meals with increased frequency.  I also typically recommend medication for 3-4 months, which would be a Proton Pump Inhibitor (ie- Nexium, (esomeprazole) Prevacid, Protonix)

: Take a garlic extract, drink green tea, and reduce stress. Reduce meat products, sugary foods ,spicy foods, and alcohol consumption. See your doctor if none of these suggestions help.

Specifically, diet, smoking, alcohol?
