i am taking tablets for seizures. i took eptoin 100 mg twice a day, but due to its side effects like over growth of jaw in my teeth my doctor prescribed levipil 500 mg. now my doubt is whether both these tablets are equal bcoz the dosage differs?

Discuss with ur doc: Medications differ &amp; standard dosing is set  by research. Just because one is listed as 100 mg &amp; the other 500 mg does not mean they are not equal in effectiveness. Dose amounts are set at the lowest quantity that provides the desired effect.

i'm currently taking 300 mg of phenytoin daily for epilepsy. i'm also taking a calcium and vitamin d3 supplement. the d3 is a fairly high dosage due to the phenytoin. should i take magnesium? if so how much and with the d3 or not?

: Best to get your magnesium level tested. Ask you doctor to test it and then discuss the results with your doctor to see if you need it supplemented.

SEE BELOW: You have been placed on a drug known in the USA as Dilantin, or phenylhydantoin, and the principle use is to prevent seizures.  Perhaps you had a significant head injury, and need future interventions to stabilize and restore your normal functioning.  Work closely with a neurologist, and do NOT suddenly stop your eptoin.

Many adverse rxns.: Drugs don't have symptoms-they are adverse reactions and Phenytoin has serious and common events. Serious:suicidality, stevens-johnson syndrome, anaphylaxis, hepatotoxicity, deceased platelet count, whiteblood cell count or across all blood lines, etc. Common rxns:nausea, vomiting, rash, slurred speech, tremor, gum hyperplasia, coarse facial features, ataxia, confusion etc. There are others in both.

Same as dilantin: Dilantin (phenytoin) is an anti-epileptic drug, also called an anticonvulsant. It works by slowing down impulses in the brain that cause seizures.
 
Dilantin is used to control seizures. It does not treat all types of seizures, and your doctor will determine if it is the right medication for you.

Phenytoin: Not sure what you mean. Phenytoin is not considered to be a sedative by definition. This stands for the fact it doesn't possess properties that inhibit the brain in such a way as to induce relaxation, drowsiness, somnolence, calming.

Maybe from surgery.: Endovascular coiling of brain aneurysms uses x-rays to look inside the head while the aneurysm is fixed. Sometimes, when large amounts of x-rays are used, patients will notice some hair falling out. This usually grows back in several months. If you are concerned, speak to your surgeon.

My response: First, phenytoin is an 80 yo archaic drug, which due to its numerous problems would never be approved these days by the American FDA.  Best way to reduce side effects is to find a better drug and slowly taper off your current drug, closely working with your doctor.

Prevent seizures: Phenytoin (or dilantin) is an anti-seizure medication that is also used for some types of nerve pain.  While very effective, it has a number of nasty side effects with longer term use, and many physicians are trying to transition patients away from it.
