Immune memory: IgG antibodies persist over time. The are the "memory" arm of the immune system and facilitate removal of the virus and targeted immune response upon re-exposure or re-activation. The IgM levels are both low and not helpful in determining when an infection may have occurred. So, at some point you have been exposed to the virus (like most people). Mono test: The EBV antibody viral capsid antigen IgG appears within 7 days after infection and last for life. The IGM antibody appears in 7 days, but lasts 3 months. Labs are various on tere actual levels, so you will need to talk to your provider about the levels in accordance with the labs norms.

Q: my ebv igm came back that i have acute 8.0 ebv/mono.. i've been having severe symptoms for 3-4 weeks, how long will this keep up?

Infectious mononucle: Ebv disease can persist for months in some individuals and there is little means of predicting time to recovery. It appears to be helpful to maximize your rest and keep a healthy diet and do not stress yourself with overindulgence of alcohol or drugs. Past EBV infection: You have normal level of igm which is below0.90 both times and positive igg test, which suggests a past infection eith eb virus and 3.44 or 5.14 both have the same message as past infection and increase may be just a number given by labs.You might have had infestion in recent past and that is why igg is higher.

Q: ebv/ab igg 366.0(0-21.9), ebv/ab nuclear 599.9(0-21.9), ebv/ab igm 10.0(0-43.9), ebv/ab early 5.0(0-10.9). what does it mean? anything to concern?

EBV: This is most consistent with a prior inactive infection, most of us have had ebv (mono) before we are 16 years old.

Doubt reactivation: While it is very common to shed EBV during stress and illness as in Herpes simplex, EBV almost never " reactivates" except in patients with profound immunosuppressive, like a bone marrow transplant patient. Hi antibody tigers do not correlate with active disease. Even positive EBV cultures almost always reflect shedding and not invasive disease. Most patients are asymptomatically infected asbabies

Makes perfect sense: Igm antibodies rise only during the actual, acute infection. They then fade away and are replaced by the various igg antibodies, which are the ones that provide lifetime protection against the same strain of the virus. So your numbers are consistent with the fact you had mono years ago. There is no igm, and positive igg levels. So you are immune and do not currently have mono.

i need help understanding my epstein-barr virus test result. i have been very sick for over a month and doctors are sure its mono, but 2 mono tests were negative. on ebv test i see that only ebv vca igm is elevated. is this a positive result?

Probably not EBV: IgM antibody tests are very unreliable; your positive result likely is false -- if you really had EBV, your mono tests would be positive. You may have "heterophile negative" mononucleosis, i.e. mono not caused by EBV. Probably not serious -- mono (whether due to EBV or otherwise) almost always clears up over a few weeks with no long term health consequences. Discuss with your doctors.

Insufficient: VCA IgG and EBV IgM sometimes are not sufficient to tell, what exactly is going on. More tests may help, for example "D early antigen (EA-D)" and "Epstein Barr nuclear antigen (EBNA)".

Yes: Epstein-barr virus is the cause of the disease infectious mononucleosis, or "mono".  Nausea and vomiting don't occur in every case, but if liver enzymes such as alt are elevated, are fairly common.
