Nerve removal: Endodontic treatment is required when the nerve in the tooth has become non-vital or irreversibly inflamed. A dead nerve releases toxins into the bone causing an abscess, and a severely inflamed nerve causes unbearable pain. Either way, root canal therapy is indicated to save the tooth.

Maybe: Ativan (lorazepam) is an effective antianxiety drug that is often used to premed patients prio to surgery.  Usually given im or IV for surgery but can be given orally to aid in relaxing nervous patients.  I have used Valium (diazepam) in my office for years to effectively pre medicate nervous patients going into oral surgery or root canal treatment.

RCT retreatment: If you are being treated by an Endodontist, discuss this issue with him\her. They will know what needs to be done and if this tooth is salvageable or requires an extraction. I recommend that you also see a General Dentist or Prosthodontist to confirm the long term prognosis of this tooth and discuss your treatment options.

Endodontic treatmnet: Both those countries have socialized medicine. If you can get the treatment done - remember its rationed care- then payment is made to the doctor directly and is based on schedules set up by the government. Its getting the treatment that is the issue and also getting it in a suitable time frame.

No: The infection usually resolves quite quickly,  in the order of days to weeks.   The bone that was lost due to the abscess can months to years to fill in.  That of course assumes the treatment is successful.   Followup is very important to ensure all is well.

Definitely: Endodontic infections fall into two categories, "granulomas" which comprise ~95%, and "cysts" which comprise ~5% of endodontic infections. Root canal treatments are performed in order to prevent or heal endodontic infections. If you don't have an endodontic cyst, having a root canal treatment definitely decreases the chance of having endodontic cysts.

No: Novacaine was the old drug used to get people numb back in the 1900's Alon with ether. Then evolved Lidocaine as a more potent anesthetic because epinephrine was added to ensure vasoconstriction in the area to keep the area number, longer. Now we use Septocaine or Articane which can give profound anesthesia in minutes. So root canals and other infected areas are much easier to numb and keep numb

is it safe to drive after a root canal treatment (molar #13)? i got referred to an endodontist that is approximately an hour + drive from my home. or should i find someone to drive me ?

Safe: For most people this should not be a problem. If you are concerned/aprehensive, feel that you might be distracted as the anesthesia wears off, just want someone to help you unwind, reach out to a friend or family member to accompany you. But gen really speaking you should be just fine.

what could be cause of a toothache that resulted an endodontist to perform two root canal treatments (due to deep cavities) and still there is throbbi?

Accepted Answer

Infection: Cavities may result in your teeth being infected.  Even after the root canal treatment is finished, you may have some traces of infection and/or post operative pain. Please talk to your dentist.
