Usually you: follow the patient and institute BRAND NAME thyroid replacenebt when the TSH increases above nornal, TSH and free T4 are the only tests necessary once you have established elevated antithyroid ab&#x27;s. Over 60% of normal people have soe symptoms of hypothyroid with a normal thyroid. Diseases can cause symptoms, but symptoms don&#x27;t cause you to have a disease.

No: Thyroid tests regularly fluctuate due to stress. My suggestion is to continue to keep an eye on it. May want to also have doctor examine ur thyroid and see if u need a UltraSound of the thyroid gland.

Thyroid antibodies: Hashimotos disease - its an autoimmune disorder causing thyroid inflammation. An ultrasound should be performed to detect thyroid nodules. It can cause thyroid dysfunction ie TSH abnormalities over time.

May not be thyroid: Symptoms are often similar for a number of dieases. If symptoms suggest a certain disease a screening test will often be done. If the screening test is negative (TSH) further, more specific testing (thyroid antibodies) is usually not indicated. If symptoms persist with no other explanation, re-evaluation of a certain diagnosis may be indicated.

Thyroiditis: Antithyroid antibodies only suggest that there is an autoimmune reaction towards the thyroid.  It takes a fair amount of destruction of the thyroid gland to affect  its function.

hi there, 4 years ago, doctor done regular blood work and tested postive for thyroid antibodies but still have normal tsh up to day with no symptoms and normal tsh up to day. doctor suggested hashimots but wondering, why he did not consider graves?

: Graves has very low TSH and high T3-T 4 often bulging eyes, rapid heart rate. Sometimes HBP. Best to go to Uptodate.com and read all about thyroid diseases. Can get very complex-even 4 Drs. Will cost a bit or u can ask Dr to send you a free 1 month subscription if they use it.

Yes: Tsh 7.69 with high tpo is not "high normal" but high and indicates hypothyroidism. Having high tpo indicates autoimmune or hashimoto's thyroiditis. I suggest adding selenium zinc b complex and vitamin c and iodine and avoiding gluten for a month and  rechecking levels in a month. If no change then you might need thyroid supplementation.

Thyroid &amp; fertility: Women with high TPO antibodies, even if the TSH is normal, have a higher risk of miscarriage, and miscarriage can be very early and appear to be infertility.  If the TSH is elevated, that can interfere with cycles and ovulation.   Even if TSH is normal, some MDs will treat with levothyroxine to lower TSH to low-normal range.  Talk to your ob about this.

: The sensitivity depends what the antibody is. Even with the most sensitive one, Anti-TPO Ab, still 10% of patients with Hashimoto' s thyroiditis can be negative for that antibody.
