my partner has tested positive for both ebv and cmv ive been trying to understand how common coinfection for these infections are. is it common, to have both? google hasnt helped and i am worried this has shortened our lives. we live in australia?

: It is my understanding that most adults will show evidence of prior EBV infection, and some will show evidence of prior CMV.  They are common childhood illnesses and not considered an STD, although they may be transmitted by social contact. I have found no data suggesting this interferes with longevity.

Long recovery: I'm assuming you mean you had a positive CMV/EBV IgM ( meaning you have active infections). If this is the case, you could feel sick for many months.Treatment is rest, rest and more rest.

Yes and no: There are 2 strains of the ebv and you could theoretically be infected separately by both.Cmv is thought to confer lifetime immunity with any infection so unless you have a problem with your immune system, you would have that once. There are also other viruses that cause mono-like syndromes that would masquerade as an ebv infection.

Unclear: Your question is very unclear.  It is hard to know what you are asking, but in general when you test for some types of infection, you check both IgM and IgG type antibodies.  If the IgM is high that means you are currently or very recently infected. If IgM is normal, but IgG if high that means old infection.  Hope that helps.

In general sense: Only in a general sense. If you have IgM antibody for either CMV or EBV, then the infection was relatively recent. If IgM is negative and IgG is positive then the infection was in the past. As everyone's transition from IgM to IgG varies, more specific timing of the infection is not possible.

Diagnosis needed: What we need here is the 'cause' for your swollen lymph nodes. Hopefully your doctors are working hard to figure this out. Immunophenotyping is a technique used to study the protein expressed by cells - and therefore a way to 'identify' what cells they are and therefore 'what is' the disease process. Next step...: I'm glad the hepatitis family has been ruled and trust hepatitis e, which very rarely goes chronic, is not a consideration. Please be sure that hemochromatosis, autoimmune hepatitis, antitrypsin deficiency, and wilson's have also been ruled out. If they are, you may be one of those folks who gets a "non-alcoholic steatohepatitis" diagnosis -- an invitation to better health through aerobic fitness.
