Use correct cleaning: techniques. New piercings are usually cleaned twice a day. Do not twist  jewelry / post. Saturate gauze w saline solution (pinch of sea salt in warm water), place on piercing &amp; allow it to gently drip into the piercing. Or you can buy pressurized saline solution at a drug store.

Not normal: I recommend treating this inflammation/infection by warm water applications, wash with soap, pat dry and apply an antibiotic ointment like Neosporin or bacitracin. There may be an element of an allergic reaction to the earring.

Signs : Signs of an infection are: redness, swelling, pain, and warmth to the touch.  You may or may not notice pus leaking from the site of infection.  The best way to treat a piercing infection is to remove the piercing (in your case an earring) and call your doctor since you may need antibiotics.  You then need to leave the piercing out, let the hole heal over and re-pierce when completely healed.  Otherwise, if you replace an earring while the wound is still infected, the bacteria cling to the earring where the antibiotics cannot reach and continue to reinfect the site.

Small ear keloid: A small keloid can be very effectively reduced with a dilute injection of appropriate steroid. It would be a first choice, unless a prior injection was unsuccessful. Often, the cause of these keloids can be the metal punch used to create the ear hole, The hole could be ragged, trap skin cells, or scar from poor care.   It  occurs in all skin types, but creams are not effective.
