: When it is positive, it definitely means positive. However, a negative result can occur in at least half the swabs that should be positive.

i had an encounter about 22 years ago that was at higher risk for hiv infection. is it possible to be hiv infected for 22 years and not know it, i.e., have no signs or symptoms?

: You can go anywhere from two weeks to two months with flu like symptoms and not test positive, but can infect others. As time goes on and your immune system is weakened you will feel the effects and test positive. After 22 years you would be dead without treatment if tested positive.

Babies: A 10 month old with infection should be seen by his pediatrician.  Babies under a year of age are quite susceptible to rapidly becoming ill with what appear to be minor problems.  Not sure without seeing the rash what it is, but the pediatrician will recognize chickenpox immediately.

A good sign : Your  primary care,  surgeon and anesthesiologist  are being careful. Checking the right pre  op tests.  Gallbladder surgery is seldom urgent   let them do a thorough evaluation of the ekg abnormality .  If there are real cardiac issues, that should be addressed prior to an elective surgery.  If the cardiac tests  come out ok, you can have a safe operation.

when headache is a side effect of medicine, e.g., provigil, is it typically just a symptom to be treated, or a warning sign that the med is dangerous?

Symptom, if none bef: Mostlikely it is the side effect of the medication.  If you stop the medication, the headache is gone; then most likely it is the side effect.  However, if it persist after is stopped. Need to look for other causes.

recently went to e.r blood pressure was high until they put me on an i.v with fluids in it.. then blood pressure went down.sign of dehydration or not?

Could be: The bodies usual response to a volume depletion (such as dehydration) would be to increase the blood pressure and heart rate to make sure the internal organs were properly supplied with nutrients.

1 mo. 10mg lex did nothing. 1 mo.of effexor (venlafaxine) xr and only s/e. switched to 20mg lexapro & after 6 days no signs of anything at all. what's my deal?

Patience: Unfortunately it sometimes takes several trials to find the right antidepressant that helps you without causing side effects. Lexapro (escitalopram) is a very good antidepressant, but 6 days isn't enough time to judge whether the 20mg will work for you. Antidepressants have a cumulative effect that builds up over time. Give it 4-6 weeks before giving up on it. I know you'd love to feel better now, hopefully soon

Don't know when: You did the pregnancy tests. A standard pregnancy test is usually done when a period is missed.
