Keep it clean: Dry socket is caused by  poor primary closure or poor healing  of the extraction sire. If you are smoker stop smoking immediately. Keep the area clean to promote better healing. Rinse with with warm water and salt and see your dentist asap.

Pack it: Dry socket or alveolar osteitis is inflamation of the bone in the extraction socket .   It is painfull and can be treated with a medicated pack by your dentist.  The pack should be replaced very couple days in severe cases.   Meanwhile, taking anti inflammatory pain meds may help.  Like Motrin if you are not allergic.

Highly unlikely: But if the surgical area is symptomatic, call the Dentist or Dental Specialist way did the extraction.  They may want to see you for reevaluation, or prescribe a specific course of treatment.  The treating professional is the person that knows your individual circumstances best of all.

Dry sockets?: First you are correct, the likelihood is much less on upper teeth. Drink anything nutritious.

Smoking is: Never ok. However, 4 days after the wisdom teeth surgery if no bleeding, swelling or pain you can go back to your daily routine.

Dry socket: As you describe your symptoms you do not have a dry socket.  With a dry socket you loose the healing blood clot and  have intense pain. Follow the instructions give by your  dentist for the best healing.

Swallowing : Swallowing in and of itself should not cause a dry socket.

"dry socket" refers to a condition where the blood clot that develops in the socket after a tooth extraction breaks down or is sucked out resulting in the exposure of the underlying bone. This this condition exposes the underlying nerves leading to extreme pain, death of the superficial layer of exposed bone and delayed healing. Pain medications are not capable of controlling the pain. Treatment, performed by the extracting dentist, consists of irrigating the socket out to remove debris and placing a sedative dressing. This procedure is repeated over the next several days. Patients at high risk include smokers who inhale the hot caustic gases. Trying to smoke with gauze in the mouth does not prevent dry sockets. Though second hand smoke has been documented to have a detrimental effect on your health it will not in and of itself cause a dry socket.

TransientParesthesia: If the nerve damage is from pressure following surgery and the nerve hasn’t been severed then there is a pretty good chance that recovery will occur in 3-6 month. Magnesium, and B vitamins, especially Vitamin B1, B12 and Vitamin A are recommended. See your surgeon for eval.

Go back to OS: I would go back to the oral surgeon/dentist and have the area evaluated and possibly professionally debrided (cleaned/flushed out.)  Trying to do so yourself may cause infection or other problems, and slow the healing process
