An perinatologist (specialist in treating such problems) or an experienced ob-gyn doctor can help a patient decide on a plan.

You and your doctor will monitor for signs or preterm labor as part of your routine prenatal care. There are medications to slow or stop labor that can be used if needed and some women qualify for weekly Progesterone shots.

CALL YOUR OB !!!!: If you are far enough 39 weeks you may want to get induced, depending on the situation I do this for my patients, and it is safe to do at or after 39 weeks, what you are describing can happen before you actually go into labor  but call your OB !  they may want to tell you things you can do to help the contraxcions if you are far enough along , i tell only my pts certain things they can try.

Preterm contractions: Premature contractions? Or premature labor? Premature labor is treated with Nifedipine (procardia). Real premature labor can't really be stopped by any agent for more than 24 - 48 hrs. Enough time to give steroids to the mother to accelerate fetal lung maturity.

At delivery: Braxton hicks contractions are fairly normal at 35 weeks of pregnancy. Thay may continue off and on until delivery. It's hard to be patient, but the next month will be over before you know it.

Terbutaline: Terbutaline will sometimes stop your contractions long enough(36-48 hours) to give you a steroid treatment that will help the lung maturity of your baby as well as lessen other problems if the baby delivers early. Other drugs are used more commonly now as terbutaline can cause problems. There is no drug that you can take every day that will prolong your pregnancy. These are only short term.

Depends: A marginal placenta previa may not cause a preterm birth, but may cause extra bleeding close to term and durin labor. Since blood is an irritant, some women deliver a little early with this problem. Pelvic rest is important and avoid heavy lifting. Let your doctor know if you are bleeding as this can mean a serious problem.

Have pelvic exam: It is not uncommon condition among young females. As physician i would ask any other symptoms associated with vaginal contraction. If you are sexually active young lady, i prefer pelvic exam and possible pap smear on the way and culture cervical fluid to rule out bacterial infection that can give you vaginosis. Talk to ob/gyn and will find out for you.
