Not likely: Painful lymph nodes is almost never a sign of hodgkins lymphoma, especially without any weight loss or night sweats.  However, i agree with dr. Kittaneh, your should definitely get it checked out.

Just stop: You may have withdrawal symptoms which can only be handled medically but for that, you will need a medical evaluation.  This can be done inpatient or out patient. With the use of appropriate protocols.  Strategies to stop drinking bycutting down usually fail.  If you had that level of control, you would not need to ask how to do it.

No: In moderation it won't hurt but wont help.  A heavy drinker will skip important nutrients and that would be detrimental to healing.

Alcohol: There are no currently available drugs to reduce alcohol consumption. The only drug in the past used to control alcohol use was "Antabuse". This must only be used under careful medical supervision because of its SERIOUS side effects. The best drug to reduce alcohol use is self control. Barring this try good psychotherapy and or AA.

Unaswerable: You do realize that we are really physicians here.  Medicine has little to say about alcohol use unless it is being abused or causing damage to one's health.  I believe that unless you have health consequences to your drinking then drinking rarely and slowly is a good piece of advise to remember. Moderation in all things.

Weigh carefully: Moderate drinking (2 drinks or less/day for men, and 1 drink or less/day for women) may protect against coronary artery disease and heart attack.  Also this could raise levels of hdl, the "good" cholesterol, and reduce the risk of blood clots forming in coronary arteries.  These small amounts could also reduce risk of dementia.  Heavy drinking (4+ drinks/day, etc) negates these possible benefits.

'Filter' shut down: Alcohol anesthetizes some of the higher functions of the brain, including the one that 'filters' what we say and constrains what we do. This makes many less serious (the 'fun' / 'happy' drunks), but makes others brutally honest / 'mean' or downright angry. When sober, should address this pattern with your friend and discourage him/her from alcohol use due to its negative immediate effects on them.
