DS Phenotype: flattened face, upward-slanting eyes, skin folds at inner corners of eyes,  transverse palmar crease, &amp; more.  Many have congenital anomalies of the heart, intestine, skeletal system &amp; other organs, along with hearing loss, vision problems &amp; certain blood &amp; neurological disorders. Intellectual Disability is usually mild-moderate. Guidelines for medical &amp; developmental care are well-established.

Variable: They do die relatively young in the 20s and 30s but they thrive on love just the same as normal kids and their death is unpredictable.

Downs Syndrome: I assume you mean toilet training? Either way, this site should be a good source for all of your Down's Syndrome questions. Also, look for local support groups, as well. ACOG charts show the: risk of having a fetus with a Trisomy 21, Down Syndrome, at prenatal diagnosis vs.  the  risk of having a live-born infant with DS because ~ 25% are lost.  If there is no family history or prior infant with DS, at age 42 at delivery,the risk is 1/63; risk at 16 weeks'  gestation is 1/50 - 1/55. Risk of any chromosomal disorder at term is 1/42. If 43 at term, DS risk is 1/49; of any trisomy, 1/33.

Possibly ,but: Down syndrome females are capable of reproduction but most pregnancies have resulted from abuse, end prematurely & are often delivered c section. The defect can be passed on but some offspring are normal.

Doubt it would Hapn: While females with ds are capable of reproduction( with difficult pregnancies) males  with few exceptions are not. For a male to be capable, i would expect him to be a partially affected mosaic ds & fertility would depend on the tissues of his body that has ds info. Having family support thru their lives is a great asset to anyone with ds or any impairment.

Chromosome influence: The size & shape of the skull & facial features of Down syndrome patients is heavily influenced bu the effect of the extra chromosome present in every cell of the body.The same goes for eyes, hands & feet all of which require a lot of decoding during formation to produce the structures. Many other chromosome defects produce some common features to those born with the abnormality.

Personal answer: It's a tricky question in that each respondent would have to give his/her opinion on the matter. I am against abortions, period! i believe that each child is a gift of god, hence, it's our responsibility to accept that child as such. I fully realize that others may disagree with that, but i just  relay my opinion.

which careers are out there that work with autistic and down syndrome children?

Many: Teachers,  speech , physical and occupational therapists as well as medical providers and psychologists  are some of the career paths that would allow you to work with special needs children.  If your goal is to work with these children you just need to decide in what capacity. Do you want to be hands on providing services or have more indirect role. The possibilities are endless.

Lots: There are quite a few fields, including nutrition, childhood development, child and adolescent psychology, child and adolescent psychiatry (physicians) and developmental and behavioral health pediatrics (physicians), or general pediatrics (physicians).  As to whether any of these jobs are fun . . . That's up to each individual.
