if you have hpv when are you contagious? are you contagious forever after catch it or are there times it isn't contagious. because i know it's with you for life once you get it. but it can go dormant.?

: Unfortunately, you can't tell if the infection has been in latent or not. Of course, if you have HPV lesion(s) then risk of transmission is very high. Fortunately, HPV infection often becomes dormant (latent) so HPV-infected people are not the true carriers. A majority of Americans above 30 years old have been exposed to HPV &amp; that's why we do not advocate HPV vaccine beyond 26 years of age.

It varies for each: person. We don't know why HPV becomes active in certain people and not in others, but there is no way to predict whether it will cause warts on your genitals or not. A very important thing to remember is that as long as you have HPV, you can still transmit it, even if you don't have visible warts. That's why doctor's recommend condom use and the HPV vaccine for sexually active men and women.

Yes: there are many types of HPV and most people who have it never see warts.  So, some types of HPV would show up as warts, but virus lives deeper.

: Those who have active genital warts are considered contagious as long as they are present. They can disappear in a 2 year period from a natural immune response or be removed by laser/chemicals/freezing. There may be residual viral shedding (contagious) for a period after removal from unrecognized tissue sources.Condoms help some when the wart is covered but completely. When all gone=not contagious

i requested a hpv test after testing negative the past five years ( five years ago i had cervical hpv). if it comes out negative am i still contagious?

Accepted Answer

No need for retest: It was a mistake to have another HPV test. if you have been sexually active in the past 5 years, probably you have been reexposed and likely reinfected with HPV. A positive result now probably would not be recurrence of your past infection. Regardless of  your new test result, you can safely assume that previous infection is gone and no longer contagious. Your more recent infection(s)? Maybe.

is it common for hpv to lie dormant, but then resurface a few years later and this pattern repeat? if so, wouldnt it keep being missed on smear tests? asking for my wife?

: Yes, this is quite frequent. However, reactivation of HPV (e.g. with an abnormal Pap smear) is increasingly rare after age 50 or thereabouts, and Pap smears usually are no longer recommended. Your wife is very unlikely to ever have cervical cancer or any other adverse effect from HPV. If your wife remains concerned, she should discuss this with her gynecologist.

i had hpv but it went away can it clear or go dormant is my question. many people say it can clear others say it can go dormant i need clarity. my paps are all normal should i worry????

: For some women, HPV just clears, but for others it goes dormant. I would recommend that you continue to have regular Pap smear tests, alone every 3 years, or with an HPV test every 5 years or as recommended by your doctor.  If there are any cell changes, you will catch them early and be able to have those cells removed by colposcopy. Don’t worry, just don’t miss your Pap smears.

does having hpv viruses in a dormant state mean that hpv viruses remain hidden in the body without any multiplication or action?(without infecting cells) also, does dormant hpv reactivate mean that the hidden hpv has started multiplying again?

: Dormancy means the virus is hiding inside cells of  tissues where the blood flow that contains antibodies &amp; killer cells cannot reach it. Reactivation means it has emerged from its hiding place in cells and is multiplying faster than the body can kill it or push it back into hibernation. If it is truly re-activated it may become contagious.
