Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) and OCs: Some antibiotics may reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives.  Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) (trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole) is not one known to have much, if any effect.  However, it's not a bad idea to use additional protection while you are taking the antibiotic.

: In general, it is never a good idea to give a medication designed for humans to any kind of animal. Some animals have different means of metabolism and different body sizes, and they can have side effects which are not present in humans. If there is a question, contact your veterinarian. Still effective: The morning after pill is not less effective when taken with sulfa antibiotics.  St johns wort taken with the morning after pill will make it less effective.

Medication: It is always best to take as few medications as necessary. Take a good look at your current list of medications and then discuss with your doctor which ones you might be able to go without.
There are times when primary care physicians and specialists add medication to your load without careful consideration of what you are already taking.

prescribed bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) for cellulitis to take 2 pills bid. have been taking every 12 hours. i've skipped dose and now it's 6hours later. what to do?

Take: Trying to take the medication exactly 12 hours apart is not needed (6-16 hours apart is fine). Take the miss dose now. Give it about 6 hours and take the next dose. Tomorrow get back to a normal schedule.

See answer: The half-life of a drug is the time it takes for a drug to lose half (50%) of its pharmacologic or physiologic properties. The half-life of the two drug ingredients in Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) are 8 and 10 hrs. Therefore, after 5 half-lifes or 40 and 50 hrs for the 2 drugs, 97% of the drugs will be out of your system (~2 days).  One would expect any related insomnia to be short?

Always protected: A woman who is properly taking her birth control pills, and is beyond her first pack of pills, has contraceptive protection ALL the time, regardless of where she is in her pill pack. Adding condoms helps prevent diseases, and may decrease vaginal odor or discharge (by not having disintegrating sperm/semen hang around inside her vagina). Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) itself should not affect BC pills effectiveness.
