Only prolactinomas: A cystic lump seen in the pituitary region on a MRI scan may represent one of several different types of growths: a cystic pituitary adenoma, craniopharyngioma, rathke cleft cyst, or others that are less common. Of these different types of pituitary growths, only a specific type of pituitary adenoma that makes prolactin (i.e. Prolactinoma) responds to medication. The others need surgical therapy.

what can a mri show on pituitary glands? my wife is going to get an mri done to examine her pituitary gland.  if there is something wrong with her hypothalamus instead, would the mri also show that?

MRI : Mri scans are excellent at showing detailed brain anatomy and certain kinds of pathology such as masses, tumors, hemorrhage (bleeding), infection, or inflammation. The hypothalamus is located very close to the pituitary, so a detailed pituitary study will also include a good look at the hypothalamus. If there is a major abnormality such as a tumor involving either structure, it should be visible on the mri. However, there are some abnormalities or diseases of these structures that may not be visible on the MRI because they are too small to be detected by imaging. For example, there may be an abnormality at a cellular or microscopic level that affects the endocrine function of these brain regions but does not produce a visible structural abnormality.

i have been trying to gwt pregnant for three years with no luck and found out i have a mask on my pituitary gland. can i still get pregnant?

Do you mean "mass"?: If you mean a mass on your pituitary, it may be a benign adenoma secreting a hormone called prolactin which can cause weight gain, irregular periods and infertility. Treatment with medication is most common, surgery rarely needed anymore. Rx can return things to normal and restore fertility. You need an endocrinologist, neurosurgeon and eye dr appts.

Pituitary surgery: It usually is not "dangerous" at all. Most neurosurgeons are able to perform this via intranasal route which limits adverse effects.

Pituitary Gland: The gland is not in close proximity to the nasopharyngeal region to cause congestion. Symptoms of pituitary dysfunction due to size can be visual problems and headaches as well as possible endocrine problems, if you have concerns, take it over with your doctor.

my fsh levels are nearly 0 since i don't have a pituitary gland. do i need to be on birth control so i don't get pregnant? or am i good without it?

Not ovulating : Without a pituitary your body cannot ovulate. So you will not need contraception for that reason. Hopefully you see an endocrinologist or other doctor who manages the hormone deficiencies your body has due to the lack of pituitary. Without estrogen you won't ovulate but you also are at risk of bone loss (osteoporosis) and heart disease. Sometimes birth control is used for this. See your doctor.
