Melanoma: There is no specific amount of sun exposure that is considered totally safe.  A single exposure could theoretically cause a melanoma. For any individual, however, there are many factors at play which will make an exposure more or less likely to start changes the result in melanoma.  However, the more sun exposure there is, the higher the probability of developing a melanoma.

No exact amount : There is no "minimum" amount of sun exposure you need to have to get melanoma. Intermittent sun exposure is a big risk. If you are out in the sun, you should wear spf 30 sunscreen and reapply often.

: MOST IF NOT ALL MELANOMAS TAKE YEARS TO DEVELOP AND SINCE YOUR ONLY 18 TAKE PRECAUTIONS BY USING SUN BLOCK. SINCE YOU LIVE IN AN AREA WHERE THE SUN IS STRONG ALWAYS TAKE PERCAUTIONS AND IF YOU A DARK MOLE OR MOLES ON YOUR BODY THAN GO TO A DERMATOLOGIST.

Yes it can: Even though melanoma is serious disease , fortunately incidence is relatively low 21.6 per 100,000 population  with over all 5 yr survival rate of 91.5% . Early detection is essential for cure, even if you have a mole any where in the body  professional surveillance is needed  ( have to see your doctor to watch )

Time growth: The pattern of growth of melanoma is defined by the thickness of the lesion with those defined by Breslow of more than 1.5 mm thick having a greater possibility of spreading.  With time the flat, thin appearance changes and the melanoma grows thicker to take on a nodular appearance.  Later, this nodular lesion takes on an ulcerating picture wherein the prognosis is far poorer.

Possibly: The warning signs for moles are ABCDE, for: Asymmetry, Border( irregular edges), Color( multiple colors, changing color), Diameter ( greater than6mm), Evolving( a mole that is changing in any way, such as enlarging, bleeding, itching)any of these signs should prompt a visit to the dermatologist.

can a neck mole get darker from sun exposure? it hasn't demonstrated any other other signs/symptoms of melanoma. i'm a 20 y/o man. biopsy in july.

Not likely: If the mole is changing over a fairly short period of time, you are right to get it evaluated and biopsied.  While sunlight is implicated in the causation of melanoma, there is no evidence that it will change a mole that is pre-existing.

Yes: The intensity of the ultraviolet is much less due to the greater distance through the atmosphere, but ultraviolet damage is cumulative. A sunblocker is a good idea, and if you're outdoors a lot, keep an eye on your skin, and have someone else look where you can't.
