can you have strep throat and not get a fever? i have blisters on the back of throat and my body aches. it started sunday morning, but no fever yet.

You can get strep: without a fever, however this doesn't sound like strep, which doesn't usually have blisters. This sounds like it could be Coxsackie virus, which is treated symptomatically, not with antibiotics. Please see your doctor to be properly diagnosed and treated.

if i have a uti (not under meds) and get strep throat with fever over 101........joint and body aches with sore throat........can that make uti worse?

Accepted Answer

Possible: Since you are not on antibiotics, your immune system has to do all the work.  If you have other infections going on, your body may be weaker allowing the infections to worsen.  However, even without the sore throat and joint aches, UTI will get worse over time.  Also, with your combination of symptoms, i would get checked out asap and get antibiotics.  All your symptoms may be from stds.

Possible flu: Please get tested with a nasal swab for influenza.  You have to take Tamiflu within 48 hours of onset  for it to be effective.

Lymph nodes: Usually not. But tender, swollen lymph nodes could make the neck sore.

Pharyngitis: Usually hoarseness or a loss of voice is a sign that the infection is a viral infection.

Most are viruses: Toddlers are constantly chewing/sucking their fingers or touching the world around them.That gives them ample opportunity to sample every virus or bacteria  that exists in their environment. Their mouth/throat is the entrance to their immune system and tonsils that react when stimulated. Strep is sensitive to antibiotics but the viruses must run their course.

See below: A sore throat is exactly what it says it is - a sore throat (more of a symptom).  Strep throat is a specific cause of sore throat caused by group a strep bacteria.  Testing by your doctor is the only way to tell if it is strep or not.

my 12 yo son gets 5-6 colds each winter. each lasts 3-4 days. low grade fever, soar throat, body aches, strep is neg. should i be concerned?

Not usually: It sounds like these are typical viral colds, that seem to go away in a typical fashion.  Although 5-6 does seem to be a lot, exposure to new bugs, like starting a new school, could easily explain this.  Also, if he has allergies this may predispose him to getting upper respiratory infections.  Finally, make sure noone around him smokes, as this may contribute to frequent infections.

Strep throat: Great question!  Streptococcal bacteria lives in our throat. When it becomes the predominant organism then we get pain as the immune system and the bacteria fight a war. There are some people that have strep in their throat all the time and they cohabitate in other words they are carriers are no signs of disease - Not treated. Evidence of disease is the redness, the white patches and the pain.
