Possible: Levothyroxine (t4) has a long 1/2 life (up to 10 days in new hypothyroidism) so it is possible to dose a higher dose less often (e.g. 100mcg every other day).  The problem we run into is compliance issues: many patients tend to forget  to take their pills unless it is given once daily.

Abusing meds: No. The opposite would happen.

Look for other cause: If your thyroid hormone levels are normal, start looking for another cause for your symptoms.

TSH: If your are on Thyroxine, you should have a TSH drawn. TSH or thyroid stimulating hormone is the signal from the brain which tells your thyroid to secrete thyroxine. When you are taking thyroxine the appropriate dose should normalize the TSH level.

Yes: Thyroid hormone has a very long "half-life".  It will make no difference taking 75 mcg very other day vs 1/2 pill every day.  However, a dose of 37.5 mcg daily is a very small dose for someone in your age group.  If 75 mcg was too high a dose, you could be on 50 mcg as the next step down.

fnp wants to raise my synthroid (thyroxine) from 50 mcg to 75. i don't understand the mechanics behind this medicine. can you explain?

TSH: Hi. Your FNP probably tested your TSH and found it to be high on your current dose of 50 mcg/day. TSH is the pituitary hormone that reflects thyroid status (assuming normal pituitary function); if TSH is hi, your pituitary is trying to push your thyroid to make more thyroid hormone, but your thyroid is damaged and can't. Therefore, you give more Synthroid (thyroxine) until the TSH is down in the normal range

37.5: 75 every day should be OK. 
When you get your next meds from your pharmacy make sure there is a line down the middle of the pill that makes it easy to break (not cut) in two.

Most likely: Depending on your synthroid (thyroxine) dosage and degree of the lack of your own bodys thyroid hormones.  Coming off synthroid (thyroxine) abruptly can cause some serious disturbances in your heart, metabolism, and effect other hormones of your body.  You must be feeling sluggish.   Not sure why you did, i'm sure you have a good reason for it but if you dont like synthroid (thyroxine)!  you have other options.
