Why are you taking: Pepto-Bismol. Pepto is usually used to treat diarrhea and you are constipated. So quit taking it.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

Yes: The commonest side effects from pepto are black stool, black tongue, constipation and - if really overdone - tinnitus (ringing in the ears). Of course you are taking the pepto short-term for soemthing; if you feel the need to continue it for more than 2 weeks you should see your md.

Pepto Bismal: Pepto Bismal can certainly lead to more dense stools. When you pass more dense stools for long periods you can develop hemorrhoids which are usually painful as well. If you are having blood in your stools without any pain, I would recommend seeking GI consultation. Very low risk of cancer or malignancy at your age, but this could be a sign of an inflammatory bowel disease.

ive been having dark brown, but not black, stool the past couple weeks with sometimes visible mucus on it. i dont take any iron supplements or pepto bismol. i do suffer from chronic constipation. is this a cause for concern?

Depends: Stool color depends on diet, medications and supplements. If the dark brown is due to blood that has been degraded that may indicate Gastrointestinal bleeding which requires further evaluation. If it is not due to blood May generally reflect diet.
