took 5day pred burst 3 weeks ago. now want to take 7day medrol (methylprednisolone) pack to ease severe unrelenting cough. is this safe or too close together?

Accepted Answer

Would not repeat: If the cough persists this long and did not respond to the initial course of prednisone, i would not repeat it. Get a chest x ray.

i am on my last day of methylprednisolone 4 mg pack and taking benzonatate for a cough but i still have the cough. what should i do?

Accepted Answer

Cough: If the cough is improving, then adequate sleep and hydration and tincture of time should fix it. Some post-viral bronchospasm can even last up to 6 weeks to 3 months, but usually will resolve within 2 weeks. Is asthma or emphysema a problem? Is the cough worsening? If so, seeing your physician for follow-up is a good plan.

on methylprednisolone 4 mg / 6days for cough.  will this cause weight gain? constipation?

Accepted Answer

Medrol: This may cause some temporary fluid retention. Avoid adding salt in your diet. I haven't noted significant constipation as a side effect, but there would be no harm in taking a stool softener or fiber supplement.

is methylprednisolone (plus tamiflu) helpful for an at risk elderly patient with compromised breathing?  he is beginning to cough after flu exposure.

Accepted Answer

Mgt: The  use of steroids help to decrease inflammation in the airway. If the cough is related to wheezing an inhaler such as Albuterol can be added.  If there is a high fever or worsening, please have your PCP obtain a chest radiograph.

is it okay to take dextromethorphan while on virtussin ac? for persistent cough, dr gave me virtussin and medrol (methylprednisolone) dose pack.

Usually can do that: Virtussin AC is like Robitussin AC, which is guaifenesin plus codeine. Adding a dose of dextromethorphan (DM) would be like taking the over-the-counter Robitussin DM (guaifenesin and dextromethorphan) plus a bit of prescription codeine. Of course, each patient is different, with various reasons for coughing. That means one should ask his own doctor about what to do when a cough won't go away, or recurs, or worsens.

i have been having bronchi for at least  month. ear infection, then cold appeared. on medrol (methylprednisolone) and decongestants, proair inhaler, but can't cough up phlegm?

Chronic cough: A chronic cough needs to be seen by your internist or pulmonary docotr and/or ent, a cxr, asthma testing , blood test, test for whooping cough and fungal infection and make sure you don't have reflux or allergies, one shoulg not be using proair continuosly for one month.

Cough: In addition to infectious cause, the 3 most common causes of a chronic cough include asthma, rhinitis, and gastroesophageal reflux. An allergist/immunologist or a primary care physician can help evaluate and diagnose the reason for your chronic cough. You should see a physician if the cough has persisted despite steroids

Depends: If your hip pain and cough are related, you should probably be seen. If you have bronchitis or wheezing often a steroid can help that.

Accepted Answer

Add expectorant: Use a mucous thinning medication like guafenesin.  You can also drink more water to thin the mucous.

Steam inhalation: Try steam inhalation as it may help in clearing the nasal and respiratory passages. 
Wish you good health! - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.
