Many things: For a healthy person, probably the most common cause is a neuroma especially if it just two toes that are numb. Other causes are neuropathy for example that whih is associated with diabetes. Tight shoes such as cycling shoes or high heels are another cause. I recommend seeing a podiatrist so you can have a thorough history and physical exam.

A number of things: They can include tight fitting stockings and/or shoes, overuse, neuropathy from diabetes or other medical reasons, a local nerve issue such as a neuroma or tarsal tunnel syndrome, radiculopathy- nerve issues in the low back or leg (such as sciatica) that refer pain down.

I would suggest that if it persists more than a couple of days and/or gets worse, to seek a podiatrist.

L5/S1: There is cross over of the nerve levels in the toes.  The foot in general gets sensation mostly from the L5 and s1 nerve roots.  Is it in both feet?  Most nerve root problems are one sided, especially at your age.  Discuss with your doc.

If both are involved then, one could reasonably think of some type of metabolic (chemical) imbalance or condition in the body or also think of a compression in the back of a spinal nerve. Neuropathy: What you described suggests peripheral neuropathy. You should see your doctor for an evaluation and among other things get tested for diabetes. In the meantime take multivitamins, in case it is due to vitamin deficiency.
