Gas: Many processed foods contain dairy products; so you have to check ingredients. Of course, other dairy products contain lactose, too—cheese, ice cream, yogurt. You can take lactase tablets (otc) before a meal to help break down lactose. Simethicone can help break up gas bubbles to relieve bloating & discomfort.

Up to 4 hours: Undigested lactose begins to form gas when it utilized by gut bacteria in the colon. Usually 1 to 2 hours after it is ingested. Gas produced is usually hydrogen. Bloating will stop when there is no more lactose available to the intestinal bacteria.

Possible: It is possible.  Try taking two lactaid or the generic equivalent with your next glass of milk and see if resolves the symptoms.  If it is only milk and not ice cream or any other foods then may be something else and you should see your doctor.

Another reason is lactose intolerance, in which one can't digest the lactose (milk sugar) he eats. Again, bacteria will feed on it. Gas can build up, causing bloating.

Sure lact intol?: If you are sure the symptoms are due to lactose intolerance, as opposed to lots of other causes, e.g. Ulcers, infection, inflammatory bowel, celiac, parasites, tumors, other, then warm beverages may help stimulate bowel and pass gas.  Gas-x works in stomach not farther down. Peppermint oil, chamomile, fennel, caraway all decrease spasm in bowel-may help. If recurrent symptom, see md.

May not: be related. Iron deficiency is common in menstruating women. Bloating may come from food allergies, eating certain gas causing  food , chronic constipation and GI bacterial overgrowth
