hi dr, i had acl surgery in april 2015. i have done all the rehab. however my knee continues to have effusion. what do i do?

See orthopedist: If you are still having swelling/effusion a year after surgery, I would follow up with your orthopedic surgeon.  It is possible that there is something new going on, because the swelling from the surgery should have resolved months ago.

are there rehab exercises can i do for a torn acl?

Yes: Get evaluated by an orthopedic surgeon who will refer you to a physical therapist.  Pt will work with you on best exercises to strengthen the knee without further damage.  This will optimize your function whether or not the next step is surgery.

Biking: Biking is a great way to help regain range of motion and strength after ACL reconstruction.  Later in the rehab process, lunges and squats would be appropriate.  But it is important to progress slowly and with proper form.  I highly recommend that you seek guidance from a physical therapist who can help with your exercise progression and technique.

how long does acl tear rehab usually take?

Depends: Following an ACL reconstruction post tear, the rehab usually involves three months of regular physical therapy, then some follow up as needed.  Our physical therapist then will do a three month sports/functional test to see whether you can be discharged from pt or if you need to continue.  Overall, it take a whole year for the graft to mature, so some pt may be needed off and on during that year.

ACL Reconstruction: Yes, you can still have an acl reconstruction. Acl tears do not heal on their own & having it replaced can help you maintain a healthy/ active lifestyle in the years to come. The acl is a major knee stabalizer, and can provide security to your knee that may prevent further damage to nearby tendons, ligaments, muscles, articular cartilage, meniscus, & bones when compared to a "loose knee"

Acl rehab: You can do physical therapy for about a month but further home exercises needed for up to a year to increase flexibility and strength.

Depends: Physical therapy for ACL post-op patients is somewhat standard; the difference is the physical therapist and his/her likes/dislikes regarding exercise choices; and your overall medical history.

3-6 months : Sometimes longer many varibles preop fitness post op goals type  of repair fixation device used other injuires your surgeon can tell you best.

acl and meniscus reconstruction surgery done. what is the rehabilitation period for recovery?

Accepted Answer

6-12 mos: Acl: generally speaking.  12 wks for straight line jogging, 6 mos for pivoting activity.  12 mos for full recovery.  Maybe a bit longer if allograft used.

Meniscus:  most meniscal surgeries are a meniscectomy rather than a repair.  Meniscectomy recovery is about 1-2 months depending upon other factors.
Meniscal healing after a repair is not a guarantee.  It takes 6-12 months for full healing.

what is rehab like after acl surgery?

Accepted Answer

Necessary: After a severe injury to the knee like an ACL injury & subsequent surgery, the knee is weakened, swollen, painful, and in need of major healing.  Without thearpy, one may not gain all of the potential that is left in that injured knee.  It may be painful to go through the rehab, but it is necessary.  With the right therapy, supervision & medications, you should do well.  Work hard.  It's worth it!
