Diflucan (fluconazole): Yes - it is a potent inhibitor of CYP 2C9. This can affect the levels of the birth control pill you use and this will ultimately affect ovulation. Please talk to your GYN he should be advising you.

i'm on my week of inactive birth control pills. if i take a fluconazole 150mg tablet, will it make my birth control less effective?

Birth control pills: There is no evidence to suggest that it would.  If anything, other azole antifungals (like ketoconazole) inhibit the pathway in the liver that metabolizes your birth control pill, i.e. Make more of the pill available not less.  The only antibiotic that was shown to reduce efficacy of birth control was rifampin, which speeds up the metabolic pathway in the liver.

No: I haven't not seen anything written re:  Diflucan (fluconazole) causing the pill to be less effective, etc.  As a matter of fact, the birth control pill does not lose effectiveness in the face of many antibiotics - much to the surprise of many ob/gyns.

Fluconazole: Fluconazole does not affect birth control. Alcohol consumption does not need to be restricted after single dose Fluconazole. The half life of one dose is 30 hours.

Medications: There is no interaction between Ashylna and fluconazole. Alcohol (ethanol)  is the toxic waste product of a fungus and toxic to our bodies. It has addictive qualities. I recommend that my patient avoid alcohol.

Don't know which: oral contraceptive you are referring to.     Diflucan can impact effectiveness of  some oral contraceptives  which may lead to recommendations to use a back up form of birth control.

Yes: It can. You may need to use a back up form of birth control temporarily.

Depends: The answer depends on where you were in your cycle when you did Quick Start. Two weeks is a safe conservative answer without knowing your exact details

Hard to say :     I'm more concerned about the decision- Why would you switch pills in the middle of a cycle ? It seems likely that this is the answer to the question, but it's really not a good idea to mix up BCP's mid cycle for any reason, be careful, consult your OB on how to use birth control

are low dose birth control pills less effective than high dose ones? (i was switched to junel fe 1/20 after having problems with a higher dose pill)

Accepted Answer

No: Not if you take them regularly.  If you are extremely overweight there is data that low dose birth control is not as effective.
