Shoulder replacement: Once you have had shoulder reconstructions the normal musculature is weaker. Hence it is not advisable to lift weights that would impose stress on the shoulder or to throw a ball. You can still lift weights but restrict shoulder motion.

Shoulder tendon tear: Small tendon tear can easily become complete and need surgery.  Be specific as to the tendon and what % is torn.  I love to play too. Be smart.

Physical Therapy: There are of course many different types of injuries that can affect a shoulder.  Appropriate evaluation by a trainer and/or orthopaedic surgeon will help direct treatment.  Most injuries can be adequately treated with rehab and therapy.

Surgery: If you have a dislocation that is put back in socket if it recurs, will usually require surgery.

Not recommended: During recovery from mono, the spleen is very susceptible to injury. If the football should hit your abdomen, it could cause rupture of the spleen. I know of a  recovering mono patient who ruptured his spleen after catching a frisbee

i have shoulder pain after an impact playing football. the pain didn't materialize until several hours after the impact. what are the implications?

Get exam: Shoulder injuries occur frequently w/ football. A 'common ' injury that can make itself known after u play is an ac joint injury. A fall on the point of the shoulder or a tackle can injure the joint that the clavicle ( collarbone) makes w/ the 'tip' (acromion) of the shoulder( acromioclavicular jt). See an ors for evaluation. The majority of" shoulder separations " can be treated non-operatively

what's the most effective way to prevent contact dermatitis from football helmet?

Accepted Answer

Coat the area: If the dermatitis is from an irritation, try to get a better fitting one.  If the dermatitis is itchy, the reaction may be from a contact allergy to the material which comes into contact with the face (rubber in particular).  If you are allergic to rubber , try to find a substitute containing no rubber. If no such substitute is available, try to coat the area with polyurethane or clear nail polish.

i was playing football yesterday and i went to tackle someone and my shoulder popped out of socket. how do i treat this?

Accepted Answer

RICE: At your age (not that you are old) i would sling it for a week and see how it feels.  Try to avoid throwing motion.  If you have pain that continues and is laterally based you could have torn your rotator cuff. Recurrent instability is going to be less likely.  Seek a shoulder specialist if your pain continues following period of rest, ice and nsaids.

Accepted Answer

Get it evaluated: There are be several causes of shoulder pain after trauma. See an orthopedist to determine what causes your shoulder symptoms.
