Short term: There are at least three effects that venlafaxine (effexor) has on sleep - it has a short term effect increasing agitation and insomnia that lasts usually only a few days, it has a long term effect improving sleep by treating depression (which has a big negative effect on sleep), and it has a small long term effect reducing rem or dream sleep. For most people #2 is the most important.

Effexor (venlafaxine) side effects: Yes to both. Consider lower dose for insomnia. Suggest you see your doctor to get your bp checked. If it's higher than usual for you, discuss with prescribing doc to discontinue this med. Had this happen once with a patient who's pcp thought higher bp was from 'stress.' I knew Effexor (venlafaxine) could increase bp. Pcp and I agreed to stop the med and her bp dropped to normal. I hope this helps. Best wishes.

Well, yes BUT.....: It is a toss up.  Effexor (venlafaxine) can cause somnolence in up to 14% of patients &  insomnia in 11% to 25% of patients. Please d'/w your prescribing provider.

i'm still taking seroquel 50mg at night. how long will i feel the bad  effects (anxiety, insomnia) effexor (venlafaxine) and prozac has caused since stopped taking

It depends.: Stopping antidepressants can cause a "discontinuation syndrome" that people mistake for withdrawals because the symptoms include nausea, sleep disturbance irritability and a flu-like symptoms hence these medications should done gradually. The length of the symptoms will vary depending on how high a the doses were and how long you've been taking them. Seroquel (quetiapine) helps with sleep.

im on effexor 75 mg and i have insomnia. i take pill at like 1pm. i have been prescribed ambien aswell. will this help?

: This combination could lead to problems like drowsiness, dizziness,coordination impairment, concentration difficulty &amp; these can be problematic while driving a vehicle or operating machinery, etc. Some clinicians prefer trazodone as a sleep aid in combination with effexor. Discuss with your prescribing MD.

How's your sleep: hygiene?   Retire &amp; rise same time each day. Bedroom should be dark &amp; cool - used only for sex &amp; sleep. Turn off tv. No naps. Exercise regularly but not in late evening. No caffeine for 6 hrs &amp; no alcohol or tobacco w/i 2 hrs of sleep. Dinner should be moderate sized &amp; finished at least 2 to 3 hours before sleep. Can try warm milk, chamomile tea or melatonin along w light reading, warm bath,

seroquel is not helping with insomnia.  it was for about a week,  but loss of sleep is creeping up again since i weaned off effexor (venlafaxine) and prozac?

Call your doctor: Please contact your physician about this asap.  S/he may need to adjust your seroquel (quetiapine) dose.  If you have bipolar disorder, the sleep loss could be impending hypomania or mania.  Your doctor will be best able to advise you.  Be well.

friend taking effexor (venlafaxine) for 3 days. has had mild side effects such as dry mouth, no appetite, headache and insomnia. now has kyphosis. perrla absent. ?

Kyphosis?: Kyphosis cannot come on quickly - it is an abnormal curvature of the upper spine.  Are both of his pupils unequal, abnormally shaped and unreactive to light and accomodation?  If so, then there is a serious problem and he should be evaluated.  The other side effects described are common for effexor (venlafaxine) and will usually subside after 4-6 weeks.

Need more info.: These side effects more than likely will not abate until you either stop the Effexor (venlafaxine) or reduce the dose.. DO NOT do this until advised so by your physician. Rapid and unsupervised changes in medications like Effexor (venlafaxine) also have certain side effects.

Find guidance: You probably do need medical guidance to help you safely wean yourself. But it is possible and you can interview physicians to see if they'll accept this as your goal and work with you on it.  Don't waste motivation worrying about whether you screwed up anything. The best time to do a good thing is now. It is not hopeless. Sleep experts may help. So may meditation skills or yoga, etc. Best wishes!
