Rarely: One can sometimes on a technically good study see portions of the coronary arteries. The oringin of the left main coronary artery for instance is not uncommonly seen. There are at the present time much better tests to visualize ther coronary arteries. One can see the results of the clogged artery, (a non-moving or poorly moving part of the heart muscle related to a blockage.).

Test value: The nuclear study gives information about perfusion(blood delivery)to various parts of the heart. You may still have blockages but your body can compensate by growing collateral vessels so that a single blockage may not affect overall blood supply to an area. The study is also helpful in giving ejection fraction information but usually correlates fairly to echo but may be more precise

Routine chest CT: can show SOME information about the heart, such as the size of the chambers, anatomy of aorta, and  calcifications which lead to heart attack. However it does not usually show clogged cardiac vessels unless a special kind of CT is ordered (Coronary CTA). Ultrasound and MRI are better to evaluate for cardiac issues which affect people in their teens and 20s, like you.

Chest pressure : Chest pressure when doing tasks is concerning for clogged arteries in the heart when someone has risk factors, man, over 45, smoker,, diabetes, not active, obese. high cholesterol, hypertension  We can evaluate blockage of the heart arteries in several ways, stress test, CT calcium score, or catheterization. What else can this be?  COVID 19, anxiety, lung issues, stomach issues. See a doctor

i had a positive stress echocardiogram   so they told me it reflected angina but my angiogram shows no blocked arteries what does it mean?

It means : You don't have large coronary artery disease. But the the smaller arteries not seen on angio could be ischemic and may explain your system. Or your heart condition is not not from an ischemic cause which would also explain the normal angio and abnormal echo.

No: Echocardiograms & stress tests are used to evaluate your heart's function and possibility of blockage in arteries to heart. However, neither test will evaluate carotid arteries. At your age, given your gender, you shouldn't need either test, nor to worry about stroke risk, unless you have an extremely strong family history of premature heart disease & stroke. Carotid ultrasound will check nec.

Not exactly: Stress echo may show evidence of ischemia, teduced blood flow to areas of heart, indicated by ECG changes as well as wall motion changes of the heart during the test. These findings would prompt further investigation on suspicion of blockages in one or more coronary arteries that would be evaluated by angiography or CT angio to determine severity and treatment options if blockages confirmed.

Sorting out: Stress echocardiogram specifically tests heart function.  CAT scanning, MRI, and arteriograms are used to look at carotids, and other arteries directly.  Doppler techniques screen indirectly.

An : An echocardiogram is a cardiac (heart) ultrasound. It creates a two-dimensional pictures of the heart. It shows how well the blood is moving, the function of the valves, leaking, size & abnormalities that would impact flow of blood (just to mention a few things). An electrocardiogram is a study which shows electrical function of the heart.  There may be changes in the heart electrical function which do not show up on an echocardiogram.  There are many different functions and parts of the heart.  A person could have no valve problems with their heart but still have occlusions or narrowing of a coronary vessel.

my 75 yr old dads echocardiogram says mild lvh with some aortic valve thickening and calcifications and some pulmonic regurgitation .remarkable study otherwise. would this show if my dad had severe coronary artery disease?

Accepted Answer

Unremarkable: Most of the studies will cite unremarkable at the end. Echocardiogram is a suboptimal test for detection of coronary artery disease and it only implies it when significant wall motion abnormalities are noted in the presence of known coronary artery disease and previous heart attacks. It cannot rule out coronary artery disease otherwise.
