Gastroenterologist : Urologists do not normally perform colonoscopies.

good afternoon doctors. my urologist wants me to do a fleet enema before a prostate biopsy. i live alone and am worried that i may not do the enema correctly. is there an oral medication i can take similar to a fleet enema like i did for colonoscopy?

: Not really. A fleets is designed to empty the last segment of your large bowel so the debris in not in the way of your procedure. Oral medications are not dependable for this. They are slow to work and incomplete when/if they do. I would look for a demonstration video online if you need to get some pointers on doing it. The fleets kit has written instructions.

i have diverticulosis and ibs after my last colonoscopy i seem to be doing better. but then i had a flare up as in pain no fever and white blood cell count was only slightly elevated. all of a sudden i have a hard time peeing and bladder pain my urologist

IBS/ dysuria: Are testicles  tender? Would check U/A for infection and  even if relatively benign consider prostatitis . Also urologist can check for post void residual and ultrasound for hydronephrosis and stones f/u with doctor

why are colonoscopy performed years apart? shouldn't they be more often? doesn't cancer grow fast?

Guidelines: There are risks and benefits as well as costs associated with every medical procedure. That is why doctors have guidelines that have been established to help us monitor and screen for diseases like cancer appropriately. Patients who have risk factors (family history, inflammatory bowel disease, polyps, etc.) are screened more frequently.

6 weeks: No good data for exact answer but prostate should have healed by then.

No: not a known risk factor for transmission of HIV. or Hepatitis

are 2 colonscopies in 2 years sufficient to rule out any flat polyps, cancers,etc? both colonoscopies were performed by experienced endoscopists.

Yes: If both colonoscopies negative, I would feel a high degree of confidence that you do not have a polyp. This is a thought if you are particularly worried about colon cancer talk to your doctor about Cologuard. This may be a better screening test for you and safer than colonoscopy.  However, this test is primarily used for screening in people 50 or older at this time.

Camera on a snake: A video camera on the end of a flexible stalk, not unlike a snake, is inserted through the rectum while you are asleep.  You don't feel a thing, you won't remember it, and the only bed part is the prep.

Physician: The colonoscopy will be done by your physician-either a gastroenterologist or a colon-rectal surgeon. A nurse or technician may help the physician.

30 minutes: Colonoscopies usually take between 15-30 minutes to complete. Facilities typically ask patients to arrive an hour early for check-in and preparation. Patients are observed for 30 minutes after the exam for a total facility time of about 2 hours.
