does a diabetic fasting number of 136 mean that the diabetes is well controlled?

Accepted Answer

Not exactly: You can't focus on just fasting sugar to determine how well controlled your diabetes is.  Mealtime blood sugars are also very important.  A 136 fasting blood sugar is not optimal. Normal fasting blood sugar is less than 100.

diag w/ reactive hypoglycemia years ago.  just had a fasting insulin number of 8 (9-29 range) what does this mean? strong family diabetes.  i'm small

Accepted Answer

Doesn't mean much: Independent of a concomitant glucose an Insulin level doesn't mean much. If blood sugar is high, low, or normal with an Insulin level of 8 uu/ml, the interpretation is completely different.

overall cholesterol is good. triglycerides are close to 300 (296) what does this mean for diabetes control? what causes this to rise, it was fine

Elevated tri's: A couple of things cause triglycerides to rise like having eaten a fatty meal prior to testing, suboptimally controlled diabetes, hypothyroidism, excessive alcohol intake and too much protein in your urine(so called nephrotic syndrome).  For you it sounds like suboptimally controlled diabetes may be the culprit.  Hope this helps.

pre catheter, took 16 units of insulin before bed to control the morning number under 6. now with a catheter need to take 20 units to try and get a good morning number . what if anything should i do to get back to 16 units? nurse looks after diabetes?

: Sometimes, with a physiologic stress, like getting a catheter, the blood sugars will temporarily go higher so more insulin is needed. It is not a huge difference to need 20 units instead of 16 but, over time, your blood sugars may return to lower levels. Monitor your blood sugars and if you start to have lower numbers, you can ask if you can try to go back to 16 units of insulin. Good luck!

i have type 2 diabetes well controlled with meds. recently face and arms/hands been tingling. what does this mean?

Not sure: Dm is associated with peripheral neuropathy - this changes sensation in hands/feet. I have yet to hear of face tingling as an association.

You are at risk: for diabetes and perhaps even have it already with a fasting glucose 126, Diet, exercise, weight loss and sometimes a medication is prescribed even BEFORE you get a Diabetes Diagnosis- some think Metformin can prevent Diabetes in a pre-diabetic, SInce you have PCOS this medication may be appropriate to lower you risk of complications in the future.

if someone has a fasting glucose of around 135 for 5+ years does this mean they have been an untreated diabetic? is fasting glucose of 135 diabetes?

: That is a high fasting glucose but I would want other numbers checked as well. What is the hemoglobin A1C, for example? If that number is still normal, then they may have borderline diabetes and can likely control it with diet and exercise. But, if that number is high, they likely have diabetes and should be checking blood sugars pre-meals and bedtime and should be treated with medicine. Good luck

IFG and diabetes: Hi. IFG is a gray zone between normal fasting glucose and diabetes; such gray zones also exist for the 2-hour glucose tolerance test ant the A1c.
