i asked my doctor who practices family medicine a question regarding my sexual health specifically an ejaculate disorder and he told me i'm fine and he sees no problem. is it safe to trust him even though he studied family medicine and not urology?

: Family physicians study under urologists for part of their training and they see many of the issues the specialists focus on. If you want confirmation of this opinion or suspect there is another answer, go see a urologist. Many health plans cover such consultations without a PCP referral, or just ask your doc for one.

Minor only: Family pactice doctor usually do minor surgery such as repair laceraton. Minor office procedures only. Some does assist in surgery as an assistant with a surgeon.Since malpractic insurance is very high even as assitant, very few fp still do assistant in surgery anymore.

No: Adolescent medicine is a sub speciality of internal medicine and of pediatrics.

For the whole family: If you have children and want the whole family to receive care in the same office, you might choose a family physician.  In some areas, family physicians also do some obstetrics

Accepted Answer

Yes: There are many good training programs in primary care sports medicine in which a family medicine doctor, emergency medicine doctor, or a pediatrician interested in athletic injuries and conditions can train.  Despite the publicity of professional athletes getting surgery, the majority of sports medicine issues do not require an operation and can be managed by nonsurgical specialists.

i am planning to change my general physician. while searching i notice two types: 'family medicine' and 'family practice'. what is the difference?

Not much difference!: Family medicine and family practice doctors are the same.  These are the doctors who specialize in you!  they provide comprehensive care across the life span from infancy through old age.  Many deliver babies!  they are able to take care of about 90% of the problems that a person needs to see a doctor for.  They provide care in the context of your biological, social and psychological situation.

for my kids can i go to a family medicine doctor or better to see a pediatrician?

Depends: If you are located in a town with available pediatricians that completed their 3-5 year training in pediatrics & keep up with changes in that area, they will have a better chance of recognizing normal variations than any doctor with less training. This can mean fewer tests or trips to consultants for simple issues. Some fm drs keep up and have broad experience with kids & would be fine.

can a doctor specialize in family medicine and then do a fellowship in infectious diseases?

Accepted Answer

No: Internal medicine and pediatrics both have infectious disease fellowships available after their primary training is completed. This is not available to those completing residencies in family practice.

Accepted Answer

Typically one: The usual is one year after, but this isnt always the case.
